Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Pros:

Smell good almost like green tea, doesn't bleach clothes, and has a clean feeling.

Cons:

Purging, but doesn't seem to get better.

So I basically used Proactive for about 2 years, and I heard about Murad and decided to give it a try. Now when I use Proactive, I saw results, but I still broke out a little here & there yet my skin looked better than what it used to look like. I had got Murad and tried it smelled really good, and it didn't bleach my clothes like proactive though. Know I know I would go through a purging stage before my skin got better, but that wasn't the case for me. My skin got even worse I had cystic pimple all on my cheeks and I would wake up to about 50 whiteheads everyday. It was very painful. After about a month and a half of using the product I decided to back to proactive and it cleared it all up again except for now thanks to Murad I have severly bad scaring on my face that I have to get fixed surgically!

Pros:

- the cleanser feels nice

Cons:

- made me go on accutane
- ruined my face and my self esteem

I first knew this product when i went to a Murad salon in my city. The salesperson there noticed that i had a few pimples, and she showed me this product and told me that it would clear things up. So i bought it, without further research and thoughts. At first, my face cleared up a bit. But then, i started to breakout. BIIIIIG TIME. After like a month or so, i had cysts all-over my face, including the areas where i never had breakouts before. I cried when i look at my face at the mirror those days, it was just horrible.I went to a dermatologist, and she had to inject those cysts to prevent extreme scarring and put me on accutane. I cried when i look at my face at the mirror those days, it was just horrible. All things considered, don't buy this thing. There are many other options out there which are safer and yet more effective than this 'money back guarantee-whatsoever-90% success rate-blablabla' ACNE WORSENING acne kit.

Pros:

Smells clean, feels clean, seems clean, bottles look clean, etc.

Cons:

Leaves condition of your face Worse off than if you never started using it!!!!!

The commercial is Verrry Persuasive, definately. And who of us suffering from acne can't help but have a little hope?! We're good people, we want to believe that there may be a cure.. WEll, Murad is Not it! When I started using this product, for the first three days it made my face smooth&happy, and then the breakouts began. I called the rep on their derm "hotline". She talked up all this purging business. It's been two months, my face is in the worst condition it has Ever been. I can only hope that it has not done lasting damage as others have expressed. Fingers crossed. Who would have thought paying a pretty penny and waiting for some bogus face crap in the mail would leave me with my fingers crossed hoping to reverse the products' effects. This product may help like 1% even 5% of people, sure. My feeling is that the 99% of us who really Need something that works will be completely screwed by MURAD. Note: When i cancelled my card, the customer service rep was fed up----Telling...

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
