Non-ablative Fractional Lasers

Compare To Other Treatments

Immediately after treatment:

  • The recovery time after non-ablative fractional laser treatment is minimal. Some redness and swelling may last 1-3 days after treatment, but most patients are able to return to work or school immediately.
  • Your doctor may recommend that you apply a cold compress to the skin to ease pain and discomfort after treatment. Wound dressings are not necessary.
  • After treatment, it is important to avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen for a couple of weeks.

Days and weeks after treatment:

  • Your skin should return to normal within a week after treatment.
  • Doctors may recommend applying moisturizer on the treated areas a few times a day for 1 week after treatment.

Longer term:

  • There is usually no long-term recovery process after treatment with a non-ablative fractional laser.
  • Some patients may experience discrete redness, skin darkening, or have a visible grid pattern on the skin (when using fractional lasers) that can last for 6 months or more.10
  • It is important to use sunscreen whenever the skin is exposed to the sun until you are completely finished with all of your treatment sessions and your skin has healed from your final treatment session.
  • Unfortunately, raised and keloid scars can sometimes recur (come back) after treatment. Keloid scars are particularly likely to recur.
