Acne.org’s Real World Take
The nuclear option. It works reliably and provides long-term remission of acne, and even severe acne, in about ⅔ of people who properly take an adequate dosage. However, it permanently and irreversibly changes the skin and the body forever and users may experience long-term side effects for the rest of their lives. It’ll nuke it, but there is no going back.

Pros:

smoother skin
clearer skin
non-oily skin

Cons:

Dry lips but not too bad if you keep up with your chap stick :) I recommend Burts Beeswax everyday and at night before you go to bed!! If i forget it at night i wake up with really bad chapped lips.

I've been taking it for almost 3 months and its clearing up my skin wonderfully! i had really bad acne since i was about 11 so im finally happy to see my skin clearing up. i have some scars left on my face but im sure it'll go away by the end of my 5 month treatment. I cant wait!!!

Pros:

I stopped breaking out after I stopped using it.

Cons:

I started getting breakouts 3 months later.

I was on it for 3 months and it made me break out incredibly bad. It was giving me more scars and bigger pimples. I gave up after 3 months in which my face cleared up for the next 3 months with no pimples. My only side affects were bloody noses and dry lips. I paid 25 a month for the rx. 25 for the monthly dr visit and 40 each month for the blood work. I went to the dermatolagis today to maybe get back on accutnne again and hopefully have a better outcome. Instead he gave me and rx for Spironolactone. Wish me luck!

Pros:

cleared up my moderate acne in the first two week butcontinued with the treatment for 16 weeks.
no acne at all any more. no side effects for me either really, no dry skin etc.

Cons:

dry lips and tiredness.

It is brilliant the few minor side effects I had are totally out weighed by the end results. If this medication agrees with you take it!!

Pros:

My skin has cleared up significantly. Even the overall texture of my skin has changed. Opposite of depression, elated about how much better my skin is looking.

Cons:

EXTREME EXTREME DRY LIPS. My lips have been dry since day 1 and have had minor nose bleeds almost every day. Basically severe dryness everywhere. Some soreness in joints.

I'm almost through with my fourth month and on 80 mg. a day. I can DEFINITELY see a huge difference. The first couple of months were ups and downs with breakouts coming and going, but now there is very rare pimples and breakouts. My biggest fear is that as soon as I finish the medicine, my acne will come back because I don't think I would go through 5 more months of this again. But WELL worth the dryness to clear up this much.

Pros:

almost instantly stops oil. reduces breakouts. if any.

Cons:

dry lips, skin. dry flaky hands. minor joint aches

i have been on it for 3 months now. i have never got results like this taking anything else.all antibiotics or gels such as proactive dont stand a chance against accutane. It is a miracle drug. but must only be used as a last resort

Pros:

It cleared up my skin from the time i started. I been on it for 6months,got off of it August now its September and my skin is looking great.

Cons:

I still have the marks that my acne left behind but they are slowly fading. There are still times where i will wake up with a HUGE ZIT on my face...when i mean huge bigger than what i ever had, but it goes away with some BP in days.

It helps, but takes times. You might see a pimple here and there but nothing like the time u first started it. So thats a good thing.

Pros:

clears skin for a short period of time, makes it not oily, changes skin type (makes other treatments more effective - like the creams

Cons:

short term effects are very bad:
-worsening acne/dryness
-this is wierd, but just about everything tasted like sand

i am 22, i have been on acutane 3 times (starting a forth round today), i havent experienced any real disagreements with acutane (cept the dryness of everything you can imagine in the human body) last 3 treatments cleared my face right up, but the acne returned after a period of time (first time, it was 3 months, second time, it was 6, third, it took much longer (8mo) before my nasty breakout, which happend a week ago) my derm. told me about 1/10 patients need to redo accutane treatments, and 1/10 need to redo it again... (means im at 1/1000, going for 1/10000) - hope the odds are on my side this time~ also told me the pills are like $20 per, without insurance, so get that first~ its worth it to me (i just wish it could work better)~

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
