Clindamycin / Benzoyl peroxide

Topical Antibiotic / Topical Antibacterial
Compare To Other Treatments

Pregnancy

There are no well-controlled trials in pregnant women treated with clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide gel. Moreover, animal reproductive toxicity studies have not been conducted with clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide gel or benzoyl peroxide alone.

Developmental animal studies conducted with the oral (not topical) use of clindamycin at doses 240 and 120 times higher than the recommended adult human dose, revealed no evidence of teratogenicity. Similarly, subcutaneous (under the skin) administration of clindamycin showed no toxic effects on the fetus.

It also is not known if or how topical clindamycin / benzoyl peroxide could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are, or plan to become, pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use topical clindamycin / benzoyl peroxide while you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding

It is not known whether clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide are excreted in human milk after their topical application. However, studies showed that clindamycin can appear in breast milk after oral or intravenous administration.

Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a woman and her doctor should make a decision whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
