Acne.org’s Real World Take
Common sense might tell us that chemical peels seem like such a great idea for acne, but in the real world, acid alone just doesn’t seem to completely take care of acne. They can also be expensive and leave the skin red and peeling for a few days every time you get one.

Product used: Glycolic Acid Peel

Pros:

I have experienced noticable improvement in my complextion. Smaller pores fine lines have begun to fade and my skin is smoother and more firm.

Cons:

The peels are done at one week intervals and for three days after applying your skin doesnt look so great. So for three days out of seven your complection is worse.

I have done a total of 4 peels. Two at 30% and two at50% at one week intervals. I plan on doing 3 more. I have seen such an improvement in my skin. I also have been applying a copper peptide night cream after the peels and think this is beneficial, as well as applying hayluronic acid lotion and spf 70 sunscreen before leaving the house in the morning. I work outdoors and live in FL and unfortunatley did not make an effort to protect my skin for any years. However these peels are proving its never to late and they actually can still repair and restore my skin.

Product used: Glycolic Acid Peel

Pros:

My skin is more even-toned, smoother skin, cleared up most of my adult acne.

Cons:

Drying, temporary burning after washing off the glycolic acid.

I use a 50% Glycolic acid peel. I do a peel once a week and I'm getting a lot of compliments about my complexion. The only pet peeve I have about the glycolic peel is the burning sensation I experience right after I wash off the glycolic acid. I usually stick my head in the freezer to minimize the burning sensation!

Pros:

awesome results on light skin

Cons:

burns like crap and downtime and hyperpigmentation o darker skinned people

I love it. I'm an estetician and I believe that light skinned people should use it. I've got 50% on my whole back and chest. I worked up to it. I suggest retin-a .1% for 2 weeks, then 12%, then 20%, then 30%, and then as high as 50% if you need it. Take 1 and 1/2 months break in between. Use aquafure for first week post peel. This is a breathable vasoline, then use blue copper by osmotics for the healing period. Best tca internet peel is Yavonne. If you carefull you will see great results. Ive worked for a dermatologist and they rip you off, and they don't know anymore about tca's than you can learn on the internet yourself. I suggest start with glycolic and salycilic peels at first then work up to 12% tca and so. See how you skin reacts to each one.

Product used: Glycolic Acid Peel

Pros:

I use 50% Glycolic acid it cleared little bumps that i had under my skin for years, makes my complexion alot less patchy, and genraly refreshes my whole face! it does work quit well and u will defanetly notice the diffrence but its no miracle cure.

Cons:

first few peels u mite have a break out coz its clearing all the deep grime out and brings it to the surface! sometimes it can be quite sore during the peel!

It is defantly the most effective home treatment out there! the first couple of peels might make u have a break out but by your 3rd or 4th peel u will defantly start to see results and you have 6 peels 1 a week! u will need a top up peel after a month or so beacuse the effects are not permanent but it is very cheap and a 30ml bottle does 30 peels so it lasts months! for me it cleared lumps under my skin that had been there for years, evened out my skin tone and made it less patchy and gives me a healthy glow, makes my face soft as a babys ass, kills all my spots (although i still get the ocasional spot but no where near as many as before) also slighty minimized my fine lines on my forhead not very much but enough to notice! so yeah i think its good! just dont exspect miracles!

Results were not immediate.
I am 29 and have been battling acne for more than 10 years due to pcos. I came off birth control pills about 2 years ago and needed some alternative treatment as a preventive measure. My concerns now are oily skin, some discolourations and occasional breakouts. The derm suggested alternating between microdermabrasion and light chemical peels every four weeks. I did not see any difference at all till the third chemical peel and this was about four months after I started this programme. The derm also gave me 10% AHA cream and acne gel to apply every night, which also didn't do much for my skin. In fact I thought my skin was looking especially dull during this period. Everybody also told me the same. I am however quite pleased with the results after the recent chemical peel. I am happy I continued going for the treatments but I wonder if it is normal to see results until much later since my peels were light? My skin now is radiant, the discoloration and most of the milia seeds are gone and no blocked pores.

Chemical peels work to an extent

Pros:

Cleanses the skin
Prevents many future breakouts

Cons:

Very expensive
Does not get rid of all the acne
Something you have to keep up with

I have the typical hormonal acne that comes with The teenage years. About once every month I go to get a chemical peel to calm my skin down and to get rid of all the filth and dirt on my skin. It does do a fantastic job of cleansing the skin and keeping the acne under control...for the most part. It does not cure me from the acne completely, but I have a gone a few months without getting a peel and my skin looked terrible. It is something that you have to keep up with and can be very expensive.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
