Pros:

None

Cons:

I had a facial peel prescribed to me by a dermatologist done yesterday morning and suffered severe 2nd degree burns due to it. I am certainly never doing this again if my face ever goes back completely normal.

Be warned, dermatologists are not to be always trusted.

Pros:

VI Peel
I had a VI Peel yesterday and today my face looks and feels sunburn. I'm told there is no discomfort but that's not true, so I put cortisone and lavendar cream on my face to soothe it, anything I can do to help it. It's also itchy.

Cons:

morning of 2nd day it feels worse. Itchy, more red, and feels sensitive and burned. I woke up swollen a little under my eyes mostly and puffy a little everywhere else. I'm sensitive to retin A but was told there isn't that much in this.

Not sure yet. Right now, maybe I wouldn't do it again. But we'll see in a few days, and I'll post back. Amanda

Pros:

well i did alot of research was back and forth on wanting to get a chemical peel. so i went to a clinic and got vitalized peel on friday today is saturday its just kinda red like a sunburn but am now worried after reading some of these results

Cons:

the results im trying to achieve is i have a red spot right on my nose that i want gone and my pores smaller and i have a little bit of acne

i am a caucasion female 24, i might now have realized been too young for a chemical peel, however there are some benefits. i already paid for 3 treatments at a discounted price so i could try going for one more and see but im gonna see how it goes once i start peeling on my first one. im wondering could a vitalized peel do much damage?

Pros:

Initial firming of the skin, which makes scars less noticeable.

Cons:

Flaking skin, lightening of skin, enlarged pores, and additional scarring.

I did 1 glycolic and 4 SA 20% peels at a plastic surgeons office every other week over a 3 month period. The first treatment was a glycolic acid peel. The treatment left my skin a little irritate and broke out the following three days, but not any real negative side effects.. The rest of the peels were 20% SA. She cleansed the skin with glycolic products and then applied the SA peel and left it on for 3 minutes followed by a 3 minute soak. Initially, my skin looked firm, but by the 3rd SA peel I noticed my skin looking worse. Against my better judgment, I went through with the 4th SA peel. My end result was multiple tiny holes, like every pore had been opened. Existing scars looked worse, and the dry, flaking skin added more scarring. I wish I could turn back time and chose another procedure.

Pros:

I don't know yet

Cons:

Did this 15% peel at the doctor's office on Monday afternoon. I did it to remove dark marks left by acne. It really burnt after about 5 minutes. Today it's 6 days later and I look as though I have been through a fire. It started flaking but the ski

It is scary. The doctor said in 6 days the majority of the peeling would be gone. In some places it hasn't started peeling. So far it is not worth it. I can only hope and pray that my skin in not destroyed! Bottom line: there must be alternatives that don't entail this suffering and the possibility of making the situation worse. This for me is not worth it.

Pros:

None, unless you consider lightening your wallet for nothing a pro.

Cons:

Waste of money, made my face worse, made huge permanent dark marks on my face.

If you are going to get a chemical peel, do NOT get a TCA peel. I had a low 15% peel and it RUINED my face. It felt like a blow torch was being put to my face when it was applied (by a nurse at my dermatologist's office), I looked like a burn victim for the next week and I could only take two days off from work, and when I went back, co-workers didn't even recognize me! I took two weeks to heal, and it left huge scars all over and made my acne worse! I regret it totally now and I am now wasting more money to correct this disaster. If you are going to get a peel, get a Beta-Lift peel. They are lighter & you have to get them done more often, but they actually work and they don't leave scarring and you can go right back to work. Again, please trust me. Go with Beta-Lift peels. The TCA's are too risky and you may regret it like me. What really blows me away is that they have do-it-yourself home kits for these! What is the FDA thinking?! I went to a doctor and it was a disa

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
