I don't know
Hello. I have done research for vitamin D levels because I have had a problem with acne for over a dozen years and every year in the summer season my skin is without pimples, smooth. My result is 13.7 ng / ml very low ... I decided and bought in the herbal store vitamin D3 5000 UI from Dr. Brest + K2 from NOW. After 3 days, my acne got worse ... I got more inflammatory and papulous changes :( I am broken ... is this sheep wool lanolin so responsive? I need to supplement this deficiency but I do not know what product ... changes are painful and itchy .. Now I read that maybe it is some allergy to the ingredients in capsules? Will vegan vitamin D3 from Lichen be better? Or maybe instead of capsules, switch to dry tablets? Please help :(

Supplement cautiously
I'm thinking of trying D3 supplementation for a third time. The first time made my skin worse which I thought could be attributed to a sensitivity to lanolin. The second time I took vegan d3 and supplemented with magnesium as I didn't want my calcium levels to soar. This also made my skin worse which may have been from the magnesium because I have read some testimonials of acne sufferers who wrote that magnesium had the opposite of the desired effect for acne. I also once supplemented with magnesium on its own and it broke me out horribly. The interesting thing with vitamin d is that it increases igf1 which is supposed to be horrible for acne. How does that work?

Doesn't seem to do much for me
I went into D3 thinking that it would be a good addition to my existing skincare regimen. I was cleansing 2x a day, using Dan's BP at night and moisturizer in the morning. My acne was more or less controlled, but I was always fighting 2 or 3 deep, painful pustules at any given time. The first time I took D3, I took it with fish oil. I noticed a surge in my libido that may or may not have been attributed to the D3. I noticed that over the span of two weeks, remnants from old pimples and red marks began to swell up. One, that had been just a small dot near my right eyebrow, grew to enormous proportions. As soon as I discontinued D3, the swelling subsided. D3 also made me break out around my mouth and near my ears. I tried D3 several more times, once on its own (no fish oil, as that seemed to exacerbate breakouts) and once with Vitamin A. Each time, it led to my existing pimples swelling up and caused me to break out around my mouth. Another symptom was red, scaly patches that appeared near my temples and on my upper eyelids. The higher the D3 dosage, the sooner these symptoms surfaced. There were no obvious positive effects - my skin stayed oily, any improvement in mood might have been placebo. I was, of course, disappointed that it didn't work for me as it had for so many other people, and I still think everyone should give D3 supplementation a shot, especially if they spend a lot of time in areas where the sun don't shine.

You may find using a vegan d3 more helpful. Some people have a bad reaction to lanolin derived d3

Pros:

a multi-vitamin has external benefits

Cons:

had no long-term positive affects on skin

I wanted to comment on Vitamin D after I've been using it for awhile and would have a strong basis for an accurate review. Although I'm seeing a lot of positive reviews I wonder how many of these will change after a longer period of use. Whether it be the placibo effect, randomness of your acne cycles, whatever, vitamin D had no real benefit for me. I'm a white male in my early 30s with mild/moderate acne. I had bad acne in high school; Accutane was the only solution I found, but after a 10 year period of relatively clear skin, I've now been experiencing the occasional breakouts. Before I go back to Accutane, I wanted to see if there were cheaper and less 'last resort' methods of cleaning up my skin. Initially I tried Vitamin D with fish oil, then just vitamin D on it's own with a generalized multi-vitamin I had already been taking. In the first few weeks I thought Vitamin D was working, but after 5-6 weeks my skin reverted back to where it was pre-vitamin D, so I discontinued it after 60 days. Maybe this worked for others, it had no positive effects for me; since this is an 'acne forum' I'm rating it a 2 out of 5. Feel free to give it a shot, what the hell, it's cheap - just don't expect miracles. I'm gonna try that acne script next, so look for my review there in a few months, lol!

Pros:

None

Cons:

Doesn't seem to work for acne

Tried this for 8 days. I believe that if something is meant to work, it should work within a week. I tried this for a week, and I was still breaking out throughout the time I trialled this... Just in case your wondering, I'm someone that wish to achieve a CURE (100% clear), and not something that just improves the situation a little. Just writing this in case someone is being bought into all the positive reviews.

Pros:

It's healthy for your bones and well-being.

Cons:

It doesn't really do anything to my acne.

Many who live in northern countries have a chronic deficiancy of vitamin D in the winter, so it's definitely recommended if you don't get enough sunlight. I've been taking vitamin D (80-140 µg per day) for about two months now and was hopeful it would work for me because my face always clears up in the summer. Sadly it hasn't improved my acne at all. I'd say give it a shot, it might work for you.
