Pros:

Clears persistent acne very well;
Relatively inexpensive.

Cons:

Many people are allergic;
Don't serve as a permanent solution.

My derm put me on a combination of Bactrim and a topical retinoid as a last step before Accutane. I've been dealing with nodulocystic acne for about a year now, and I've tried MANY different topicals and antibiotics. None have worked all too well (Duac was the most helpful topical, and no improvement with any antibiotics). Anyway, I went on Bactrim and my very broken-out face immediately cleared within a matter of one week. Unfortunately, on day 12 I had an allergic reaction to it (and discovered that I have an allergy to Sulfa-drugs). I broke out in a minor rash on my arms, legs, back and chest, and my face turned bright red. This reaction occurred over two days, then subsided. While it did give me a rash, it's been the most effective treatment so far. I'm kinda glad that I get to go on Accutane now because antibiotics are never a permanent solution.

Pros:

None so far

Cons:

Unbelievable allergic reaction. Sore throat, rash, itchyness especially around my eyes, neck and genetil area. Definitely got the flu symptoms.

I took it for 5 days and had the most severe allergic reaction. Never had an allergic reaction before. Went off it and the doctor prescribe Predisone to combat the reaction. Suddenly my skin was perfect. I suffered from alot of whiteheads / black heads and large pimples. Then a week later my skin went bad. Doctor prescribed Doxy and then my skin went worse. Monocycline does not work for me. Doctor then said try the Bactrim again and the reaction has been less, still get the sore throat and flu symptoms, sore lower back (kidney's) and some itching. I have been on it for 5 days now and have not seen any diference except the side affects. Personally I don't recommend this product and I am thinking of taking Accutane now cause nothing works!!!

Thank you Bactrim
Last summer I suffered from a horrible acne breakout going into my first year of high school. Out of my friends I was the only one dealing with massive pimples all over their forehead. I know this sounds over dramatic, but I just wasn't myself and I lost all confidence. The Dermotologist put me on Bactrim and I have never felt better in my life. I started seeing results after a couple weeks but major results in a couple months. I honestly had not one little pimple on my head. It was such a relief to have this work. I've never felt better about myself. Definitely recommend!

Works, but be careful
I have struggled with moderate/severe cystic acne off and on since I was 12 (I'm now a 31 y.o. female). A few years ago I started Bactrim. It completely cleared my skin within 3 months. I enjoyed continued clear skin as long as I took it - about 2 years. I stopped taking it about 6 months ago because I would like to become pregnant, after which the acne returned. If you take this drug, please also take a probiotic as it can cause damage to your gut, especially over long-term use. I'm currently seeing a naturopath to restore my gut flora to a healthy state and hopefully heal my skin naturally. Gut imbalances can cause/worsen acne, so be careful.

Bactrim Review
I am 26 and since about 15 I have been dealing with acne on and off. At certain times my acne has been manageable, other times I would be pretty clear for a few weeks at a time, and then other times I would hide inside and skip going out with friends. I understand that acne takes an emotional toll on you, and if I can help by providing reviews to others that's just what i'll do! Bactrim has always been my quick fix for my acne. Seriously within 1-2 days I do not have any new blemishes popping up. At least that has always been the case for me and I hope that continues to be the case. (knock on wood) All of my existing acne dries up for me as well. For me the Bactrim seems to settle well with me too. I do not notice I feel any different, my skin just keeps clearing. Right now I am dealing with painful zits on my lower part of my face. (chin & jawline, sometimes neck) The zits are not quite cysts but still hurt!! So Bactrim has helped me. The only problem is eventually your body does get used to antibiotics and it technically isn't that great to be on antibiotics constantly. I don't think my body has ever got used to bactrim I just usually stop taking it because I don't like to be on antibiotics every single day of my life. My goal right now is to get my skin clear with Bactrim then try to start spironolactone since my acne seems to be hormonal now a days. So in conclusion 5 stars for Bactrim for a real quick healing of you acne. Bactrim is great if you have a special event or something, and you want to get rid of your pesky spots quick.

Pros:

Completely Cleared Up My Skin
Cost is Reasonable

Cons:

Took Several Months to see results.
HUGE pill size
(Tastes nasty if it's in your mouth too long)

When I went and saw my dermatologist for the first time my acne was so severe, with lots of cystic pimples, and scars that she wanted to put me on Accutane, but my parents were against it since I would have to be on bc. So instead of Accutane she perscribed this. The first few months on Bacrtim I didn't see much improvement at all, and I was about ready to give up when my skin started clearing a little by little. After a year my skin has become virtually pimple free, absolutely no cystic acne, and now I feel comfortable not wearing makeup most days. My dermatologist told me at my last visit this spring that I can discontinue the Bactrim when I think I'm ready, which was great news. I'm still taking it, but I may stop it towards the end of the year. :)

Pros:

It did help clear up my acne, and realitivly quickly

Cons:

I became deathly allergic to it and was hospitalized, not worth the risk for clear skin

I have suffered from acne off and on from my teens. I would be on something and it'd clear up but then soon break out again. Minocyclene worked well but I became immune to it. My dermatologist recommendd spiriolactane, which made my skin worse then ever, the he gave me bactrim. I read several reviews on the bad side effects but thought "I've never had a reaction to any kind of drug, so I'll be fine" well I was wrong..4 weeks after taking the drug (1 pill twice a day) I am currently sitting in a hospital bed with a rash from my hair to my toes. I'm on my second night and have no idea when I will be released.. It has now infected my liver.I have never been in so much pain in my life. Please take this post seriously and do NOT think it "can't happen to you." bc I am proof that it can. It did help clear my acne, and as depressing and embarrassing as acne is, your health is not worth it. I promise you will regret it

Pros:

Skin Did Actually Start Clearing

Cons:

Allergic Reaction
Rash
Stomach Pains
3 Day Hospital Stay As A Result
Fever

I spent 3 days in hospital as a result of these meds. I was put on 600mg by my dermatologist and did't get the reaction until 7 days in to the treatment. My skin had actually started to look a tad clearer but it obviously isn't worth the risks as I was tested for Meningitus, SJS and other diseases.

Pros:

I call this pill my "happy pill" bc, everytime I take it it puts me in a really good mood and gives me a lot of energy!

Got rid of my acne, and acne marks, in about a week! I don't get any more acne. Before this, I had tried all sorts of stuff for about 4 months.

It makes you not feel hungry, and in effect you lose weight. Actually, I can't even over-eat really anymore :D

Makes you really thirsty, I drink about 4 bottles of water now. Which I think is good because the

Cons:

The only con I found was, if you don't take the pill than your acne comes back. Reminds me of taking birth control!

Overall, this pill has gotten rid of my acne like nothing else could, and it makes me feel super healthy! When I went to the dermo, he said that my acne was VERY bad.
