Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

Not awfully expensive, if you find from eco shop.

Cons:

Did not work.
Smells awful.

I tried tea tree oil after a beautician from the body shop recommended it for me. I bought their brand and I bought other brand from eco shop. Neither worked, and the smell was just eye watering. It did work wonderfully on flu and blocked nose when I put a drop in hot water and put a towel over my head, though!

Pros:

It works to an extent. I have oily skin around my nose chin and my forehead area. When I started using this product I would rub it in the oily areas after washing my face. The first few weeks it worked well but after the 3rd week, I broke out like crazy and my nose looked like Roodalf the rain deer. I might have over used it or something but my nose started to scab up and hurt. So I stopped using it.

Cons:

Makes skin dry and smells like Raid ant killer. If you use too much it will scab the skin, and clog the pores.

It is a good product to use for spot treatment, but in large areas it shouldn't be used. You get some massive side effects.

Pros:

-not too expensive
-works to dry up and prevent pimples
-does not prolong red marks like BP

Cons:

-takes longer than BP
-the smell!
-gives an icy feeling for about 5 minutes that isn't completely horrible

I mix my TTO with witch hazel to create a 5% solution. I apply it twice to my face with a cotton ball after cleansing. I really like this stuff. It dries up acne and I believe it prevents it too. It takes a while, but the fact that it doesn't prolong red marks is worth it. Also make sure you are in a well-ventilated area and dispose of your cotton balls because the smelly realllyyy lingers!

Pros:

Works...for a while
The scent
Very easy to find
Not drying

Cons:

Can sting if skin is dry/broken
Can leave skin oily

It works for me...but it doesn't. It helps clear up existing pimples, but it's so oily that it has caused more.

Pros:

- Dries up zits
- Has never left me with pock marks
- Rarely has zits appeared again in the same area

Cons:

- I would not recommend this for the dry winter weather like in NYC, it overdried my skin when I used it there
- Slow, zits go away in about a week
- Do not use this on raw skin, will over dry skin

To begin, I use the Derma-E Tea Tree and Vitamin E Oil. I started to use this in February 2010 and have not looked back. Although this product is slow, the fact that zits have rarely showed up in the same area of my face and does not leave indentations or pockmarks, is a huge thing for me. I use this as a daily spot treatment and as a weekly face massage (I wash off the TTO after). I also put cortizone 10 on zits that are bigger. Change your pillow case often and keep your scarves clean, it's very important! As I said in the cons, this is not a product that worked for me in dry weather, I would not recommend it if that's the climate you live in. I have dealt with acne since I was in elementary school. First it was hormones, then it stress that was causing my skin to break out. My skin was oily during my teen years and now is mostly combination. Now with a combination of good hygiene, exercising and a healthy diet, I've stopped worrying about zits and now just dealing with my scars and dark spots! Yay! The other products I use are: - Purpose Bar Soap - Kiehl's Sodium PCA Oil-free Moisturizer - Sanitas Glycotoner 5% When I switched from salycic acid to TTO, I didn't think I would find anything, chemical or otherwise, that would work. After 6 months, I feel confident in telling people about the awesomeness (albeit limited) of TTO. Most of the products I use are not designed for acne prone skin, I've noticed most products geared towards acne skin has done squat for me. If you have a natural beauty store near your, definitely check out Sanitas. Know your skin and be good to your body and usually, most zits will go away! Remember, you're beautiful!

Pros:

It worked. I had a big pimple on my nose and usually have oily skin around my nose and mouth area. After using it for 2 days, I noticed a significant difference. My pimple was very squishy and filled with puss but the next night it was dried and no more puss. And I put it on small pimples around my chin and it all disappeared over night. It is amazing stuff I definitely recommend it.

Cons:

Smell is kinda strong, Kinda an ammonia/alcohol type of smell. But its easy to get use to.

Works. Works. Works. But only use as spot treatment. I would not recommend rubbing all over the face. Too much of anything can be bad.

Pros:

So far so good. I've replaced benzoyl peroxide with tea tree oil in my regimen since tea tree oil has anti-cancer effects as well.

Cons:

Smell, but it dissipates quickly.
Allergic reactions to it seem to be common. My friend is allergic to it.

If you break out in hives or redness, discontinue use. You are most likely allergic to it. I dilute the tea tree oil with jojoba oil (which is also very good for acne prone skin) making a 5% TTO solution. I rub a few drops in every morning. I use it in conjunction with Retin-A and fish oil supplements. After 10 years of acne, I finally I have a treatment down that doesn't include birth control pills. You can find it for $8/2oz at Walmart, and this will go a very long way. Check out [link removed] for research abstracts done on tea tree oil or any other treatment you are interested in.

Pros:

Seemed like it got rid of acne at first

Cons:

Smell
Stopped working and made my acne worse
Left red sploches on my skin, that are still there to this day, 4 weeks later

This didn't work for me. I tried it undiluted, and it seemed to work, and i guess it just got too harsh for my skin and now i have red blotches on my skin that won't go away. I recommend diluting it first. I even tried diluting it into my face wash, and it hasnt really worked since.

Pros:

Worked

Cons:

Stinks.
Caused rash one time when I didn't dilute with carrier oil or aloe vera gel.
Drying
Took longer than BP

I didn't know at the time I tried tea tree oil that the study comparing it with BP to treat acne used 5% tea tree gel. Next time I'll try that because even diluted tea tree oil is just too drying for my skin and smells very strong. Probably because I'm not diluting it no where near as low of concentration as 5%.

Pros:

I works great as SPOT TREATMENT ONLY
What is does for me is totally eliminate the pimple and leave a dry skin patch, that peels off and reveals clear (slightly pink) skin that fades.

Cons:

Added it to my facewash, and it ruined my clear skin. Left me with red spots that still wont go away. Horrible rash..:(
Smells a bit.

I have been using it as a spot treatment and that worked great. So i added a drop or two to my cleanser, which worked great too. Unitl the 3rd day and now I have an awful rash all over my face. Red spots everywhere. So be careful. I thought my skin was used to it, but I guess not. Stick to using it as a spot treatment, or buy a cleanser where it is ONE of the ingredients..... Moral of the story: Be careful. Just because I had an allergic reaction doesn't mean you will too, but seriously, test it for a long time. The emotional damages from this is far worse than a few spots.
