A few years ago I had used oil in my skin care (grapeseed and olive) with good results, but stopped after a while. After researching oils more thoroughly recently, I decided to try hemp seed. I wasn't concerned about breakouts because I had done well with grapeseed and olive oil even though they have a higher comedogenic rating than hemp. I used a well rated hemp seed oil (nutiva), and only applied 2 drops of it after my skin care routine one night. The next day I woke up with two small cysts on my jawline. I do occaisionally get a cyst on my chin, but they've never been on the rest of my jaw. I don't believe in "purging," especially when it comes to cysts. I immediately stopped using the hemp seed oil, but have developed 3 other cysts along my jawline. Luckily they are all fairly small and only one is tender, so I'm hoping they'll go down soon.
I am incredibly happy for the people who have found great results with hemp seed oil! But if you're looking to try this oil then please proceed carefully. All the lists I saw gave it a 0 comedogenic rating, but there are many stories of people (like myself) developing cystic acne because of it. Please first do a spot test for a couple weeks. If you have cystic acne then perhaps try the spot test in that area to make sure it doesn't aggravate your symptoms!
If you have developed cystic acne or another sort of breakout because of this oil, then here are the steps I've been taking that have helped me:
Wash with a very very gentle cleanser. Follow with BHA or AHA (alternate days, but pull back if it's irritating your skin). Use azelaic acid (or benzoyl peroxide, although it is a stronger irritant) on the affected areas (I apply a thin layer across my entire jaw, not just as spot treatment, because it seems more cysts are developing along there).
It's ok, it's not your fault, and your skin will recover. The inflammation will go down and your skin will heal, it will just take time. And please if it's very serious, go to your doctor!!
