Has anyone gone out of state/ flew for acne scarring procedures and treatment? If so was it worth it?Thinking of traveling to Dr. Weiner in Florida but it seems like a lot of work to do a few times a year for real results. At the same time Ive done every single treatment out there with little results and want to see an expert in the field. Im in Dallas.Any feedback is appreciated!!

What type of scarring do you have?

Dr. Rullan specializes in subcision and Phenol Cross and I recommend him. I've seen him several times. His prices are reasonable although they have gone up substantially over the last few years due to demand and possible greed. Also, his subcision technique is pretty good.

If you're not too self-conscious, then yes, it could be worth it. With a mask on, you won't get as many stares. Also consider the cost to fly, get a hotel, and pay for food.

There may also be competent doctors for scars in TX - perhaps some people here can help you.

Ya I dont mindso much the money if its worth it to go to actual specialist in acne scars. Itdjust be one night or soif I only go out every quarter andgive the skin 3 months to heal in between treatments.I have rolling scars mostly with an ice pick here or there. But the kicker is Ialso have deepscarring froma staph infection I got on my FACEearlier this year thats left my face even more scarred upso thats my biggest issue. Lucky me. 🙁 so Im hoping he could even treat abnormal scarring from my infection I had. It basically just looks like deep acne scarring anyway. I have a consult with Dr. WeinerMonday. And I will check out Dr. Rullan too! Thanks for the help!

Subcision is for rolling scars and Cross is for ice pick scars. Dr. Rullan is an expert at both.

Phenol Cross is better than TCA Cross in my opinion: see the last video below. Phenol Peel is way different! That's extreme stuff that requires an overnight stay and a $6k bill!

Check out this guy's journey. He saw Weiner and then Rullan.

Here are some videos that may help:

I hope these all help you! If you're willing to travel, I know how much these scars affect you. I was in the same boat but I'm closer to Dr. Rullan than you are so I'm fortunate there. You can always DM me if you have any questions - I'm here for you! But there are also very helpful people on this forum and they know quite a bit as well.

By the way, I have no affiliation with Dr. Rullan and my only incentive to recommend him is to help you. I've seen many dermatologists and plastic surgeons and most of them are not that good with scars. Dr. Rullan is the doctor to see for subcision and Cross. I don't think I'd recommend him for lasers or microneedling, but if money isn't an issue, you can do one of those for his "triple threat."

All I'm trying to do is save you time and money. I've done the trial and error thing for you! :)

I just watched/ read every single one of these! Thanks so much for your help Amanda! I am going to reach out to Dr. Rullan too. Not sure if he does virtual consults first as I would need one before I go see him. I am going to see what him and Dr. Weiner say and then decide. This journey is so long and never ending. I have break downs to my husband from time to time because my skin bothers me so much!! I™ve tried everything and my skin was looking pretty good and then I got this horrible infection. Sigh... back to square one. I appreciate all your help!!

I feel you! Sometimes you just want scars to go away overnight... unfortunately, it takes many, many months to several years according to BA. The good thing is that a good number of people have seen results from treatments so there's hope for you. Hopefully, all of our info combined will give you an idea on where to start and what may best work for you based on our experiences.

The prevailing treatment plan is to start off with manual procedures (subcision and Cross) before going to lasers. RF microneedling is something Dr. Weiner does but I'm not sure what scars you have and I'm not sure how effective they are.

Also check out this girl's journey:

I guess I was under the impression Dr. Weiner did all those things too, not just laser. I was going to him so I could have at least the option to have the whole package - whatever I needed for each individual scar??

Yes, Dr. Weiner does those things and I've read google things about him. He seems knowledgeable but I don't have first hand experience. I was just saying in general that certain treatments are done first because I don't know if you were aware.

Anyway, check out both doctors and go with who you feel comfortable with. There are other ones not mentioned but these are two of the most popular ones.

If you are ever going to do it now is the time in my opinion. With masks being in style hopefully for at least the next year down time and traveling after treatments is significantly easier.

That's the reason I got a few treatments done after COVID. It's easier to hide your face with a mask! So it's a really good point that Anon made. ;D

Hey Amanda I reached out to Dr. Rullan. So did you actually go to him?? Can you tell me a little more of your experience and improvement you saw if so?

Yes, I mentioned this in an earlier response. :)

I had subcision done once because I just wanted to see if my scars responded but I didn't see any improvement - swelling made my scars look really good though! My scars are different though as they are mostly boxcar ones. The deeper scars which I thought were tethered are different than most people's in that they are more injury scars (thanks, volleyball!) that aren't traditional rolling scars which I believe would get more improvement. However, I do think Dr. Rullan's technique is quite good. I saw another dermatologist who offered subcision but Dr. Rullan had better reviews and was less costly.

I also had Phenol Cross done. A few of my scars filled in - they will never be perfect but one got to the point where I'm pretty happy and don't need further improvement. This took about four months though so it does take a while. I thought a few other ones got deeper but maybe I didn't wait long enough. I ended up lasering them a few months after Cross and the scars looked better than any time since I had my accidents.

Well I must say from my experience same thing, i am not a doctor, but my exp. is  that subcision with filler can lift the scars and release the tethers but it does very little for boxcar scars, i feel like boxcar scars are hardest to improve, even when i look at pics of some people here on forum or on internet, you can clearly see that boxcar scars resist pretty much every treatment, and i think u need some laser or medium. deep peels to get some improvement, looks like rolling scars can be improved very nicely with subc. and Microneedling RF, which happened to me, but boxcar scars improved very little. And Icepicks only CROSS , nothing else works on em .
