Scientific Study: Acne Was Naturally Selected For Because It Stops You From Having Sex

Is acne really a disease?: a theory of acne as an evolutionarily significant, high-order psychoneuroimmune interaction timed to cortical development with a crucial role in mate choice.

Abstract: Adolescent acne is considered from the perspective of evolutionary psychology with an emphasis on a role in mate choice. The fact that acne, which is almost universal and not a true infection, is (1) initiated at puberty by the action of pubertal hormones on likely distinct, pro-acne follices, and (2) typically resolves in one's early twenties when prefrontal cortex development is complete, suggests that the condition's timeframe is meaningful. Acne's conspicuous localization on the face, and its ability to elicit reflexive disgust and avoidance in observers, suggests a possible role in sexual selection. The pathophysiology of acne is reviewed, and the suggestion made that, far from being a disease, adolescent acne is a normal physiological process - a high-order psychoneuroimmune interaction - that functions to ward off potential mates until the afflicted individual is some years past the age of reproductive maturity, and thus emotionally, intellectually, and physically fit to be a parent.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I thought this hypothesis was pretty fascinating... and depressing. I don't know how convincing it is, though. Why would the particular factor of acne be naturally selected for to stop you from reproducing at a young age, when there are many other factors (e.g. libido peaking at ~17 for males) which are naturally selected for which encourage you to reproduce at a young age? It seems too contradictory.

It only stops you having sex if you let it. You can use it as an excuse to believe in rather than trying to overcome it with confidence. I know, I've been there myself but it isn't true.

I don't think this theory is valid for the most part, otherwise everyone would get acne at some stage in their lives.

It is probably why masturbation causes acne. Too much ejaculation tooearly in life doesn't allow for proper brain and hormone development. In today's world with testosterone fueled dairy and easy porn doesn't allow for abstination. Unless there is an alternative to accutane there is no other option I guess.

OK people heres some news: if youre going to believe this theory then everyone with any kind of visible physical imperfection shouldnt mate, period. Does that mean short people, fat people, people with one arm longer than the other...Doesnt that sound a little bit "Nazi-eugenics" to you?

btw the fact is most people with acne have sex/get married/ so if the theory were true, nobody with clear skin would have sex with anybody with acne which we know is not true. Ive had boyfriends with clear skin when Ive had acne, and I know plent of people who have acne with clear partners. SO maybe were not that disgusting/off-putting after all.

Notice how it's only women saying that acne hasn't made it harder for them to get men...

acne for a women = wear make up or cover up or guys don't care because 90% of men are desprate anyway.

Acne for men = eww lol groce...

I am in better shape then probably 95% of men my age, very well endowed, masculine face, defined jaw, above average face, tan, dark hair dark brows, yet I have acne that covers my forehead and is full of a bunch of red bumps so it makes getting laid with attractive women very very hard.

I frequently when I leave the house and wear a tank top get girls starring at me from 10+ feet away, heard girls say I have a nice ass, call me hot, see them stop and turn and talk and giggle when talking almost every time I leave my house with a tank top, yet getting laid is like a covert ops mission.

I have had a girl who starred at me for months, smiled at me told her friends I was hot, then I talked to her she said I was hot, she sat next to me and she saw my acne and she started laughing for no reason, only for her to make an excuse when I asked her out... why? Probably because of my red bloody dots on my forehead.

In highschool I was in good shape, and healthy but my skin was so bad that I was called dirty all the time for no reason.

Before I had acne I was one of the most popular and liked kids in my middle school.

I got acne in highschool and after that my life got a lot worse because of it.

I am contemplating going on accutane but don't want the side effects.

The picture in my avatar is me btw, athletic and masculine face and because of my skin it's messed me over.

dude...I think you should find a chick with acne herself, then she wont look at you that way. Seriously, a partner with acne would end any problems with self esteem so find a cute girl who has acne and ask her out.

Well I don't know any girls, so I would have to find a girl with acne and approach her, but since girls where make up it's hard to see.

As a matter of fact I hungout with a girl who did have acne a month ago that I picked up off the street, and she seemed pretty slutty and was texting me about her sexual fetishes and about how she watched porn and all of this, then I met up with her and I felt she wasn't interested and she pretty much rejected me after that.

Why do you chase these types of women? It's obvious to any girl within 100 yards of you that you only want one thing. Women sense that and it's a turn-off. This is why you cannot meet any decent women. Acne might hinder your chances with women but the REAL cause of your failure is your state of mind. Try being a good person, you'd be surprised how well you can do.
