In two months, I have a dermatologist appointment to continue addressing my acne, which has significantly improved thanks to my current medication. During the visit, I want to bring up concerns about treating the scars that have formed from years of occasional skin picking. These scars make me feel self-conscious, and Id like to explore options to improve their appearance. How should I approach this topic with my dermatologist, and are there any steps I can take on my own in the meantime to help with scar appearance?
Hey. A few questions and comments.
1. What med are you using that's cleared you up? Just curious.
2. Once you have scars they are permanent so there isn't much you can do to improve their appearance on your own.
3. As far as asking your doc about scars, sure you can ask, but most dermatologists are not scar specialists. You would want to find a specific dermatologist who specializes in scar repair for that. Perhaps your derm has a recommendation. And remember to be your own advocate. It's your face, not theirs. Learn about scar repair options, get multiple opinions from multiple docs, and only move forward when you are completely confident and comfortable.
