So I've battled with acne my entire life, mostly hormonal, and it used to be really f*cking bad. Then I discovered Vitex and Retin A 0.5%, and both of those combined really changed my life and managed to give me near-perfect skin for close to 5 months. I actually couldn't believe how amazing my skin was all summer, a season where my acne is normally at its worst. My acne has also typically been hormonal, and I used to breakout REALLY bad before my periods. This though, like I said, all cleared up for about 5-6 months. Until last week. In the days leading up to my period last week, I brokeout worse than ever. I have no idea why. I haven't had any lifestyle changes recently, still using the same skin care regimen, etc. and my skin is worse than ever. Also, I am incredibly healthy, I exercise every day, I drink close to a gallon of water per day, etc. etc. so I know it has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. The acne is everywhere- my entire face and neck (I NEVER breakout on my neck and I currently have 3 cysts there). I also model, and have 4 photoshoots next week that I am now dreading. PLEASE someone give me their two sense as to what might be going on. I am in suchshock/pain right now, I have no idea what to do.

P.S.- for about the last month or so I have had a few symptoms that are correlated with PCOS (although I've never been officially tested). My symptoms include serious insomnia, excessive thirst, and the most painful periods I've ever endured before. Does anyone have experience with PCOS? What do you think? Thanks!

Acne and oily skin are primarily the result of hormonal disorders caused by androgens (male hormones). Because women with PCOS have a hormonal imbalance iy causes an overproduction of the male hormones.Vitex would be the wrong thing to take, you would uually ahve to go on Spiro, or Saw palmetto, even spearmint tea to comabt the over production of androgens.
Symptoms are:

  • Missed periods
  • Unusually heavy periods
  • Breasts becoming smaller
  • Tone of voice deepens
  • Facial and body hair increases
  • Underarm skin becomes noticeably dark
  • Darkening of the skin in the folds of skin (e.g., under the breast)
  • Thinning of the hair on your head
  • Acne
  • Skin feels thicker and develops a rougher texture
