I am 35. I have 5 children. I have a hormonal imbalance that my doctor tried to treat with birth control. I had horrible side effects from the BC so I refuse to take any more. I now have cystic acne on my chest, back, neck, and face. Of course my doctor gave me antibiotics and a skin wash that makes my skin look 90 years old but does nothing to stop the acne. I am of prescriptions and I am trying supplements. I currently take vitex, evening primrose oil, b-complex, niacin, cod liver oil, and vitamin c. I need help!

How long have you been taking the supplements? Have you been allergy tested yet?

I used to have mine like that. I was always afraid to wear tank tops, anything that shows it. You can check out my post that had helped and stay clear. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/topic/363140-how-i-got-rid-of-my-bacne/
Some vitamins/supplements can be more harm than good.

Acne as an adult is definitely no fun. I'm 33 so i get it! As for supplements, i would recommend not taking a supplement or a group of supplements because of the internet. It may be worth getting tested to see if you are deficient or to match up your lifestyle and diet and their symptoms. Supplements can definitely do more harm than good.

A good place to start before getting professional help is by looking into your diet and lifestyle. Diet doesn't correlate to everyones acne but it may be an issue in your case. Big culprits are:

dairy
gluten
night shades
nuts
sugar
processed foods

If that fails after a few months of doing it diligently, then go see a derm. As much as we all like the natural way, sometimes its ok to need professional hellp, especially with stubborn acne

Good Luck!

Have you considered going down the route of more serious acne treatment such as accutane?

I have had bad acne since i was 16 and I am now 28.

It has never really improved for long periods of time maybe 2 years max when on antibiotics.  It flared up only around the time my period was due, as it was cysts it took weeks to heal so it was just a constant cycle.  I tried all antibiotics, creams, diet changes,  birth control dianette - did help but stopped being so useful after a few years.  I went to the hospital for accutane in 2013 and scared myself off reading the side effects etc that i made excuses not to start them.  Turns out 3 years later I was fed up of being miserable and confidence at 0. I started accutance in march this year started low dosage then went up to 50mg after the first two months. I finished them in July and what a difference....

I had dry lips but nothing cortibalm didnt fix almost instantly, swear by that stuff.  The odd occassion I had a few little sores around my eyes just from dry skin but again good moisturiser did the trick. I just used aveeno and that was all that I needed the entire time. I wish I had tried accutane a long time ago it has changed my life, the experience and side effects are different for everyone but i think if you have suffered for a long time and still have acne it is worth trying!

Hi!

I find vitamin D and zinc work for me. Not just that, but it helps a lot. Also, first thing in the morning I squeeze half a lemon into a glass, add warm water and drink. I've never tried vitex but I have read that it helps some people and makes others break out.

I tried accutane several years ago and I could cope with the dryness but it made me depressed. Anyway, I did it and finished the treatment, but my acne came back afterwards. It works for 80% of people apparently. I was then on Yaz for a few years (which I really, deeply regret) and I'm off the pill now. Rosehip oil makes my blemishes go away, so does skinceutical's blemish+age defense serum.

Hope I could say something more useful!

I swear Zinc made my acne worse. I was getting terrible breakouts in the time frame I took one30mg pill aday, and I believe it's because my estrogen/progesterone weren't high enough to combat the way it was boosting my testosteronelevels. I would avoid it just to be safe. Evidently it can increase effects of androcentricity in some people...especially those who have high T levels to begin with. And with your back and chest breaking out, that's a sign you should stop Zinc, since those are androgenic breakout areas. Zinc could be a good option for someone who has estrogen dominant acne, but that certainly doesn't seem to fit your case.

cloudydreamer is right, zinc seems to make some people break out, specially men or people with high testosterone levels. You mentioned your doctor said you had a hormone imbalance, do you know the details?

Oh, and I forgot to mention that B complex vitamins and such can also be linked to worsened acne in some people, and apparently even hair loss. Like B5 and B12. I would avoid taking anything other than Vitamin C to be honest, because there's also the problem of overloading your liver with too many supplement to break down...this can worsen acne and other health issues.

I would see a doctor for a hormone panel around day 20/21 of your cycle. You could always try a different form of BC too. You may have just been taking the wrong type/brand for your body. It's happened to me and many of us here.
