I think I have hormonal acne. Help!

I have really, really oily skin and I've had a few breakouts back in my teenage years to early 20s -- 2 to 3 pimples at a time, and usually before/during my "certain time of the month." I thought that was the worst of it. I thought I'd get past that awkward pimple-popping stage when I got older. Little did I know I was wrong.

When I hit 25, I've been having these huge, inflamed breakouts at random times of the month, and every breakout seemed worse than the last. It's like they come in waves -- after a group of pimples subsides and heals, another group emerges, leaving behind dark scars all over the lower half of my face. Even on my chest! I noticed my old facial wash just wasn't doing the trick anymore.

A few months ago, upon the suggestion of a friend, I switched to Clinique's Acne Solutions set and started using it as indicated.  And so far it's been doing its job as advertised: it's been clearing out my breakouts little by little (but drying out my skin sometimes).

For the veterans out there, can someone please tell me if this is a classic case of hormonal acne or is it something else? Is there someone who knows of a quicker remedy? And how to lighten the scars faster?

To be honest, my usual self-confidence has diminished greatly because of this. I work in healthcare and my job requires me to see patients everyday.  They have to look at my face when I talk to them and it gets me really self-conscious because I know my skin isn't pleasing to look at.  🙁

Did you get your homone levels checked? We can't tell you what kind of acne is that by just looking a photo...
But yes, it might be hormonal acne, especially because you're 25 -- adult break outs are usually linked to hormonal problems.

As for the solution, there's no quick one for this problem. Usually the treatment for hormonal acne is birth control, spironolactone or some vitamins, but it takes about 4 months to see some improvement. I myself have hormonal acne and tried everything I could. Only birth control pills are making my acne go away slowly -- even after about 5 months taking it, my skin isn't totally clear yet.

Luckily your acne is still mild, so treatments have a higher chance of working better. You could try the whole fixing your diet, adding vitamins, exercising etc, but if your acne is hormonal i find that none of those work contrary to people preaching how diet cures any type of acne. I recommend seeing your GP or derm and discussing birth control or spironolactone. The sooner you start something the better. I am now on yasmin and 2 weeks in and i havent gotten one inflamed zit. yet its too early to call, but my biggest regret was wasting so many months trying different hollistic things and skincare, antibiotics etc which made my acne at least 3x worse. So basically either get on some sort of hormonal medication, or keep trying different things and hope that it helps.

Hey, Chloe! So you decided to try Yasmin? How is it going? I remembered you were trying vitamins the last time I saw your posts.
I've been taking Yaz for about 5 months now and am thinking about switching to Yasmin too, since I still have tiny little bumps on my skin. Anyway, my acne is soooo much better now! No cysts anymore, yay! 🙂
The whole diet-vitamin-hollistic discussion didn't work for me AT ALL (I mean, I'm already healthy, drinking 8 glasses of water a day but, still, no difference). Birth control is the ONLY thing that made my acne go away in the past and is making my acne go away now.

Hi, I'm 26 & Ive suffered with hormonal acne for the past 10 years, I've tried working on my diet, cutting out stress / make-up, religious routines, several attempts at different birth controls & all the creams & tablets you can think of... I'd practically tried everything, but the truth is my acne comes from the inside & I have no idea what triggers it!! I'm desperate to share my miracle cure with you all! Vicks vapour rub, I've laid off all make up, moisturisers, washes, (I break out when applying anything to my face or back) for the past 10 days, I've applied Vicks 2-3 times a day, and use tea-tree face wipes between appliances for an hour or so, if I leave the house, my skin is bare for the first time in 10 years & looks clearer than it does masked in concealer!

Its definetely worth a try, for anyone who's at their wits end with their itchy red pimple ridden face that I'm so pleased to see the back off! I'm not fully flawless yet but with my wedding around the corner I'm bursting to know it's acheivable!

It looks similar to mine. To be honest most adult acne is hormonal your hormones are supposed to settle but some peoples never do. If you are finding a product you like stick with it.
hormonal birth control or Spiro seems to work in a lot of cases. Sometimes antibiotics work but they often become ineffective over time. Ive heard of lemon juice or turmeric masks for red spots but I've not used then for this. Alpha hydroxy acid and hydroquinone are used for red marks too. Hope you find answers soon?
