I started 50 mg of spiro almost 2 weeks ago. Since that time, my right chin and mouth area has exploded in red pimples with pus (this has been an area that has struggled with this type of acne for a while). I am beginning to wonder if its folliculitis due to the redness, pus and off and on itchiness of pimples there. This itchiness started a few days ago and the breakout seemed sudden too as it was mostly clogged pores with pockets if inflammatory acne.
I made an emergency appt with my derm for Tuesday as it is getting worse and not healing (I have over 13).
Can they test for folliculitis? Should I assume this an initial breakout ? Should I ask for an antibiotic? Does spiro even address this type of acne?
I am so upset. FYI, the reason I am on spiro is because it be tried everything else including accutane.
Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicle caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/basics/causes/con-20025909 .
The doctor would test for folliculitis by checking your nostrils for that bacteria http://www.healthline.com/health-news/policy-simple-steps-before-surgery-can-drastically-reduce-mrsa-infections-061813 .
If you test positive for Staph, your doctor may prescribe Mupirocin (Bactroban) http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/mupirocin-nasal-route/description/drg-20064917 or recommend Triple Antibiotic Ointment http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23377521 . Application of those topical antibiotics into your nostrils would attack Staph at the source but not affect gut bacteria like an oral antibiotic would.
Best wishes and hopefully you and your dermatologist come to an effective solution soon
