I'm a 17 year old guy and have been taking different 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as 50mg Zinc and 4 bags of green tea a day for a while now to help treat my acne and oily skin a bit which they have done a fair bit, but recently I've been concerned as to whether they could be affecting my development to any extent seeing as I'm a teenager going through puberty and all- I mean I'm a tall guy and stuff so I doubt that they've had a massive impact but I'm just wandering if it's worth taking these inhibitors to treat something that is most likely only temporary if it means I will live the rest of my life with a less square jaw, less broad shoulders, less deep voice and so on than I could potentially have. I WANT TO BE SOMEWHAT ATTRACTIVE WHEN I'M OLDER OKAY :'(

... :P

oh and btw sorry I'm not sure if it's 'effect' or 'affect' so please don't get mad at me people! D:

I wouldn't worry about it, Matt the supplements you are on are both very mild and are normal doses, even for those not trying to treat acne. In my opinion, you would only need to worry about development if you were taking a much stronger anti-androgen like spironolactone or finasteride.

Is the zinc helping your acne? If not maybe you could lower the dose a little unless you are vegetarian in which case extra zinc is beneficial. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. In a handful of oysters, there is almost 80mg zinc! Four bags of green tea a day is not much at all either, by the way. When I was in China, I saw people drink it by the liter. I also drink 3x that or more and it didn't affect my acne, even though anti-androgens work for me.

So yeah, don't worry... taking zinc and drinking some green tea isn't going to cause even slight gender transition or anything. If you are still struggling with acne after a good 3-6 months of supplementing then it probably isn't working, however. My advice is to continue with only more mild supplements like vitamins and minerals (vitamin D is very important) until you are older. Although it isn't always the case, some simply grow out of acne. You are still too young to determine if that applies or if it will even be a long term issue.

And it is "affect" so you were right. (: "Affect" is a verb, "effect" is a noun, generally speaking.

Some cultures drink green tea constantly starting at a young age, and they still produce manly men...and zinc is found in a lot of foods..so I kinda doubt the combo is going to hurt your masculinity.

It's good you're getting started on your acne now though. Being in your twenties with lots of scars and still having adult acne is not attractive, even if you do have a really square jaw 😉
