Hi I'm new to this site and at first I was a little bit hesitant. I've been avoiding friends and missing work because of my "hormonal" acne. Constantly fighting with my boyfriend because of my acne issues which results in me being very upset and not participating in activities that we have planned due to my acne. All my friends have flawless skin so even when I try to talk to them I know they don't understand. I work in an environment where beauty is very important (night life ex. clubs) and I know it shouldn't bother me but I constantly have this fear of my co workers judging me because of my skin.
I've had acne in my teenage years. Nothing severe. Few scars but nothing that foundation won't cover. And till now (I am almost 25) my face has been clear besides a few pimples before my period. Recently however I've been dealing with what I think is hormonal acne. I've been breaking out on the left side of my cheek and small bumps all around my chin. The bumps aren't too noticeable but under certain lights and angles you can see all the tiny bumps.
I've been regularly going to an acne clinic. They would wash my face, do extractions, and put on a mask for me. The first week I would be healing and scabing. The second week my face will be fine. And by my third week I would be breaking out in the pimples and bumps all around my chin and cheeks.
I changed my diet, I exercise, eat codfish liver gel (supposedly it helps with your skin), clarisonic, shisedo pure ness face wash, Umbrian clay mask, Indian healing clay, etc. i tried purchasing expensive asian products, switching up makeup...I even started taking birth control (trisprintec) it's been around a month now. And I still break out plus I've gained around 10lbs.
I just don't know what to do anymore. If anyone is reading this I would love to get some helpful hints on how I can cure all these small bumps around my chin. I am sick of paying hundreds of dollars for my acne and taking trisprintec which is causing me to gain excessive weight.
Whoever is reading this thank you for your time.
If you've just started taking birth control, you could still be in the 'initial breakout' stage where you acne will get worse. It supposedly takes up to 3 months for the pill to start having an effect on acne (though for me it took 6 months, I guess it's different for everyone).
One thing that helped me with acne on my chin was buying a makeup with no ingredients that make me breakout and washing my makeup brushes more often. Also, I drink a ton of water, like 2-3 litres a day, and that seems to help too.
Trisprintec is a generic version of Ortho Tri Cyclen.
Acne sufferers do a lot better on "Ortho Cyclen" which is the "mono" pill version. Mono meaning it keeps your hormone stable through the month. Trisprintec fluctuates the hormones, which seems to be an issue if you have acne.
I would ask your doctor for Ortho Cyclen specifically. It does take a few months to kick in, but once your hormones have adjusted, it is usually clear skin and smooth sailing from there.
Other things that help reduce hormones that create acne:
- Cutting out dairy (dairy is loaded with hormones to help baby cows grow...not really great for adult humans)
- Cutting out sugar and refined carbs and ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE (all stimulate insulin responses which create acne)
Curing acne internally is the best way to go. Good luck.

Caffeine as in green tea? I normally don't drink coffee but I've been drinking a lot of green tea lately.
And I will definitely talk to my doctor about ortho. I'm a bit scared to switch pills because when I first started trisprintec I was very emotional and constantly crying.
Final question... I looked up hormonal acne and a lot of large cystic like pimples showed up. I've been getting small bumps all along my chin, no cystic acne. Is that still considered hormonal?
Thank you for your response I really appreciate it. I was a bit down. I missed work again tonight because of my skin and reading your response cheered me up a bit! Thanks again

It does not have to be cystic to be hormonal. But cystic acne is definitely the worst form to have, so you're lucky it hasn't progressed that far. I did not have cystic acne at first either, but as my hormones went unchecked for many years, it developed into cystic.
One recent study shows green tea increasing DHT by 194% and testosterone by 74%
It seems weird, because green tea's benefits are touted all the time, but think of it this way. There are also people going on about the antioxidant benefits of red wine. It's true. But what they don't say is that red wine is basically grape juice that's been fermented. You can get all the antioxidants from grape juice, or even just from grapes.
Green tea is similar. Yes, there are tannins in green tea. There are also tannins in pomegranates, strawberries, blueberries, walnuts, and pecans. You don't need the caffeine to get the benefits. You can even get de-caffeinated green tea extract now if you want the benefits without the caffeine.
