I've just started spiro a couple of weeks and amazingly, I'm starting to see some promising results. (my acne isn't too severe but it was bad enough)
I started taking Alesse about a month ago (before I started the spiro) and from what I understand this OC is one of the 'bad' ones in that it's high in the androgen category.
I'm in my mid 40s and in perimenopause and I thought going on the OC would help my acne but obviously my doctor didn't know better. (I'm starting to really get annoyed with the medical profession)
I used Ortho years ago and had no problems with it and I've never tried Yaz or Diane 35. (apparently Diane 35 and spiro are not a good combination)
I had used Alesse in the past without problems which is why I went back to it.
I just started a new pack about 8 days ago and I'm concerned if I stop taking the pills mid-way, what would happen to my system. (other than to cause a period) I'm aware that spiro can cause menstrual irregularities. So far I haven't experienced any of the side effects I've read about. (dizziness, nausea, etc.)
I'll be seeing a doctor to get a medical opinion.
Any thoughts? Should I finish off this current pack of Alesse and stop taking OC altogether?
btw, I'm not with a partner or sexually active so becoming pregnant is not a concern.
I use spiro alone. For birth control I use a copper iud with no hormones. If becoming pregnant is not a concern, I would phase out the Alesse gradually.
Thanks for your input. I've stopped taking the Alesse and monitoring my cycle. So far it looks like I'm getting my periods every month, albeit the number of days between cycles has gotten a bit shorter by a few days, at least for now.
