emn-
thanks for checking in! my skin actually has cleared up really nicely this week- impressive especially because it's the week before my period. i can't believe how much less oily my face is, that alone i think makes my face look a lot more presentable, and makes me feel better about it. The bumps I had all over my forehead have pretty much disappeared in the last week and right now I just have one small bump on my left cheek-- totally coverable with makeup. I don't know if i'm out of the woods yet(i am always so scared to get too excited about something), but things overall have definitely improved. Paired with the sunny weather we just got here in the Northeast, things are happy on my third week of spiro.
I am going to take your advice about the water and broccoli- i def. feel thirsty/dehydrated on this medicine but have not been drinking as much as I should. I eat almonds all the time--- got to cut that out now too i guess. thanks for the tips.
glad your skin is clearing up as well. keep me updated on your progress! i'll try to post weekly on my end.
ps. have you, or anyone experienced cramping while on spiro? my left leg(upper thigh) has been cramping up terribly. i am worried about it and if it continues I will ask my Dr. about it. I have been trying to run/stretch to work it out but to no avail. I hope it is just because I havent really been watching my potassium/sodium intake and if I adjust that things will get better. I DON'T want to have to stop taking this!
I've been taking 50 mg of Spiro and 200 mg of doxycycline a day. My oil production is definitely noticeably less but I've had a horrible initial breakout. I've been taking these medicines for 2 weeks exactly. I know a lot of you have seem to have initial breakouts but it's so frustrating. I mean, it actually hurts! I can feel when I'm getting a new cyst and it is pushing its way through. It sucks because ALL my zits are cysts and they're so noticeable. They take at least a week to subside and even then the pain may be gone, but it's still noticeable. Acne is so frustrating! I haven't had a problem since the last few months. I mean, I've always had acne but never like this before. I'm 21 yrs old, female. I wonder why certain people are prone to breakout and others are not? It's just not fair....I envy people with flawless skin. I feel like everyone is looking @ my skin and I've gotten to the point where I'm embarrassed to even go out of my house. I need some encouragement that this medicine is going to work...
ktgril130: i feel your pain. i am on 100mgs of spiro and have been breaking out since i began taking it. i am so frustrated and do not want to leave the house either. it is depressing. i thought i was clearing up and then i had another massive breakout about 2 weeks in. From reading countless posts it seems like either people begin clearing right from the beginning on spiro or else it take about three months to see results. perhaps we are (unfortunately) in this three month category. at least i HOPE i am. i hope this begins to work at that point because i don't know how much more of this i can take. i know for sure i have to stick it out until the middle of may when i have my next derm. appointment. but if my face doesn't start clearing up before then i am going to have some embarrassing moments in the next few weeks-- i have a number of parties and graduation events i must attend when all i want to do is stay inside. good luck to you. try and get through at least three months i say. i will keep updating and hope you do too. i can't believe acne is ruling my life like this. ugh.
greenmountaingirl: I understand what you mean about upcoming events! I have a few wedding to go to and of course the beach this summer! I just want to feel comfortable going out onto the beach WITHOUT makeup!
I also have a question for anyone that can answer. After the two week mark of being on Spiro, Doxy, and Klaron, I've noticed that my acne has changed. I'm still getting at least one new zit a day but they have changed. My zits used to big, hard, and never had a whitehead. Since two days ago, I've had six new places come up. This time, they are much more soft, MORE PAINFUL, but create a whitehead by the end of the day. Is this a good sign???? At least these can be popped to relieve pressure (I know you're not suppose to pop them but whiteheads are gross to look @). Let me know what you guys think!
Also, what do you guys wash your face with? I'm using Oil-Free Neutrogena face wash with salicylic acid...I think it's irritating my skin.

Thanks so much for the advice EMN! I really appreciate it! It's nice to know that there could be hope for my acne! I think I'm going to stop using Neutrogena. I've been washing my face with it for two weeks and I feel like it almost makes my skin itch. I feel like I'm having an allergic reaction to it...I dunno, it's hard to describe. I think I'm going to try Cetaphil because I've heard great things about it! My derm just recommended Neutrogena but she didn't make a big deal out of whether or not I should ONLY use that cleanser! As for moisturizer, I just bought Aveeno clear complexion moisturizer so hopefully that'll help some! Thanks again for the encouragement! Means a lot!

It is really nice to be able to come on here and express how hard it is to battle acne. My family/friends are all the same way. Most of them have crystal-clear skin and it KILLS me when my mom says, "I'm getting a zit and it HURTS!". I say, "hey, how about having an entire face full of them." haha!
I used Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser last night and this morning and NO stinging or burning like before with the Neutrogena! I think I've developed a sensitivity to salicylic acid or some ingredient in Neutrogena...kinda weird. I didn't wake up with any new zits/pimples this morning so let's hope this last breakout was the END OF ALL BREAKOUTS! I feel much better today because my existing acne was not as painful so I feel like it's less noticeable! Oh, and I love the Aveeno Moisturizer! Smells good too!
Hi everyone. I've been lurking around this site for a few weeks now. It's been so useful seeing how other people have been going on Spiro.
I've had acne since I was about 12 and I'm 29 now. I tried to get Roaccutane, but the evil derm wouldn't give it to me, saying my acne wasn't bad enough and besides I'd grow out of it!
So I've been on Spiro coming up to 3 months now. I had the horrific initial outbreak after a couple of weeks. It was awful, lots of zitty whiteheads just constantly popping up. My skin does seem to be getting a bit better. I'll have a clear few days and think wow this is it, but then I get a new little crop, but they don't seem to last long. I'll see how I am at the end of the 4th month. My skin still feels quite oily and my pores don't seem to have shrunk though. I'm on 100mg a day. But the pills I've got are very powdery and me retch if I get a taste. I'm trying to find some that are coated.
The side effects haven't been too bad. A bit of dizzyness for the first few weeks.

I've tried the lot I think apart from Roaccutane. There is definitely an improvement in my skin. If after this month I'm still not completely clear then my dosage can be increased. From what I've read on these boards it's about now when I should begin to start seeing a big improvement, so I'm not overly concerned yet. I really do hope that one day I'll be able to put up the magic post saying that I'm clear and that Spiro has worked. It's lovely to read other people's success posts, it gives you a real boost.
I don't have much luck with make up. I can never seem to find a foundation or concealer that actually gives me any coverage. It only seems to sit on my face and not blend in and then it just slides off after a couple of hours. My spots are always dry and flaky and foundation just seems to highlight it more which is so frustrating. I was using differin gel as well which dried my skin out so much it didn't matter how much moisturiser I put on. Now I've stopped using it, my skin is better.
I guess when my acne is improved I'll have a whole new make up regime anyway.
I am going to check out everyday minerals and see if i can score one of those free kits you mentioned-- a lot of people have been saying good things about that stuff. I have been using Almay makeup for the last year. I really like it. It's the kind in the yellow and white packaging made for oily skin. It has salycilic acid in it and so it supposedly helps heal while covering at the same time. I really feel like the foundation does help heal breakouts...and the concealer has a really good consistency. It used to keep my skin totally oil free but I think over time I have gotten used to it and still get oily.....with time hopefully the spiro will take care of that!
ps. the addition of the antibiotic has been great. minocycline is really help calm my skin down and my breakout is definitely subsiding---thank goodness! Hopefully things will only get better from here...
Right now, I'm using Clinique's Clarifying Makeup Clear Skin Formula foundation. It lasts me a really long time! It has great coverage! It is oil-free and doesn't dry my skin out. I also think it is helping to heal my breakouts. It's really thick so you don't need much. The thickness helps provide the great coverage. Like I said in an earlier post, I just use a bit of foundation to soothe the redness and then cover with mineral makeup. I think EMN uses Clinique's Acne Solutions Concealer but it didn't blend in well with my skin for some reason. EMN really seems to like it so that could be a possibility for anyone wanting more coverage. Just thought I'd put in my two cents! Have a nice weekend ladies!

I think I am FINALLY over my initial breakout from Spiro and/or Doxy!! YAY!!! I haven't had a new zit in 3 days!!! However, my acne is still healing but overall, there are only a few places that are raised, so my face is very smooth and soft (Thanks to the Cetaphil Cleanser)! It actually didn't take forever to do my makeup this morning because there isn't much to cover (other than acne scars). I'm a little worried because my antibiotic (Doxy) ends in 5 days. Now that I'm starting to heal and my body is getting used to Doxy, I hope my face doesn't freak out once I stop. Has anyone else experienced this?
EMN: mineral makeup is awesome! I love it! I would order the Custom Free Kit if I were you. All you have to pay is $4 shipping! If you don't like it...you only wasted 4 bucks..no biggie! My advice on chosing a concealer color: Don't choose the "mint green" shade. It really does work but it works too well. It does cover up redness and scars but once you put your foundation over it, all you see is a slight shade of green on your spots so it makes them more noticeable and shiny...EEK! I use the "multitasking" concealer shade. As far as the foundation goes, I use the Intensive kind because it supposively provides more coverage than the rest. I had to order two free kits because the first time I ordered, the shades I picked were too dark. After I found my perfect shade, I ordered one of the Kits! I love this stuff! Also, thanks for the info on moisturizing! I've been using Aveeno for about 4-5 days now and it has made a difference!

YAY!! I'm so glad you guys love it!!! I told you so!! About the color issue, I'm worried about the same thing. However, I was outside ALL day in the hot sun (I live in the south) on Saturday, and my makeup didn't even crease, get greasy...NOTHING! It stayed perfect! I'm using the Intensive kind too. I would definately stick with that. Now with the color, I actually mixed my "multitasking" and "sunkissed fair" together because multitasking has gotten too light and sunkissed fair by itself was too dark. You may eventually have to do the same. Sunkissed fair is about 2 shades darker than multitasking. The medium in the cool shade ended up being way to yellow for me. It's hard to tell what shades would work best because the pictures are off by the actual shade color. Like I said before, you may have to order several free sample kits in order to figure out what shade is best for you. Let me know if you have any more questions.
On a depressing note, I had 3 cysts come up this Sunday. However, I did drink one daquiri Saturday night...maybe alcohol breaks me out. But seriously, the bartender put like one double shot in the entire blender so it was barely ANY! I'm fixing to start my period so it could be a combination of both....I'm depressed again! These cysts HURT! I finished my antibiotic yesterday so hopefully my face won't freak!
