YAZ birth control

I have been on Yaz for almost 2 and a half years now. I loved Yaz from the beginning and originally started it because of acne when nothing else had worked. I can't say it did much of anything to control my acne which only occured around my mouth, chin, and sometimes large cysts around the corners of my nose. My skin was very oily and constantly clogged. Not until 3 or 4 months ago have I really noticed a tremendous change in my skin, but i do not believe Yaz provided this change because i dramatically changed my regimen. Almost a year ago i began having severe migranes whenever i begin to take the active pills and will continously throw up all day long from them, I will not even be able to hold water down which is why i plan on discontinuing my use of this birth control. I have also experienced mood swings and crying over nothing but only recently in the past 6 months...but atleast i haven't become pregnant which is the purpose of this pill. The only thing that has really helped my acne is my regimen change, I have completely stopped using sacylic acid in my face wash and have switched to Cetaphil in the morning and Thoroughly clean fash wash which has tea tree oil in it and is a natural fash wash. I use Olay sensitive skin lotion twice a day drink water and always remove my makeup. I have been dealing with this acne since I began highschool and am now 20, and my skin has never look better. I used to have extremely oily skin but since i have been using the fash wash with tea tree oil in it for the past couple of months and have almost gone through the whole bottle it has been controlling oil production. I also have to say when you stop thinking about your acne it seems to disappear...AND DONT TOUCH THAT FACE!

Please, if my story is similar to yours, message me or reply to this post. I started taking Yaz in June of 2009

In August I developed an allergy to dairy and intestinal issues. I started to become extremely fatigued and have awful headaches. I had problems focusing and memory loss. I lost 12 pounds. My lowest weight was 109 and i am 5'7" The fatigue and mood swings are still prominent. I am extremely irritable and often depressed. I have gone to two doctors and nothing has helped. My regular doctor is not a specialist so she sent me to a GI doctor because of my dairy allergy. He thought I may have a yeast overgrowth, leaky guy syndrome, or bacteria overgrowth, but he didn't help. They don't think it is the birth control but it seems that Yaz may suck major ass for a lot of people. I have not suffered from cystic acne. I still get the occasional breakout but overall my skin has greatly improved with birth control as well as my topicals. I have to go to a hormonal doctor, the name of the specialization I can not spell.. endocrinologist maybe? I also have to see a therapist because this may all be depression. I really would like to hear from people who may have had a similar experience as mine.

So you were fine up until two months after you started Yaz? That's the first thing I would suspect. Do you think you are depressed? Docs want to blame everything on depression and throw pills at us. This does not sound like fun. Many people have allergies to dairy and don't know it. It's very mucus forming in the body. Yaz can cause trouble with yeast too. I know I'm not being helpful here ha ha. DD had gut problems and we've consulted with a naturopath and she's gotten relief by making a few changes. Many of these problems were caused by long-term antibiotic use. If you find that the Yaz is the problem, could you perhaps just go on Spiro? Change brands? Yasmin made her crazy but Yaz was better. sigh....good luck and keep us posted.

My mother and I believe, as well as the GI doctor, that going off of antibiotics caused the intestinal issues because it killed the flora/ good bacteria. I think that my depression worsened after I was fatigued and pretty sick for a few months. It seems that birth control could be a big contributor to the fatigue, mood swings, and irritability. I will keep everyone posted, I started a topic also.

well i am on YAZ.. i will try anything my face is that bad.. i have PCOS and one of the symptoms of that is acne... it's the worst acne ive ever had! (usually i just use some acne treatment and it goes away.. but not this stuff!) the only way ill leave the house is when im working and when i go to class.. THATS IT im just sad about all this.. i might as well give YAZ a try.. what have i got to loose? im starting my 3rd week.. and no sign of imporovement yet... i go to the dermatologist in 2 days and i have never been so excited for a drs. apt. in my life.. also my dad has me on all these vitmians to clear my face up.. like- zinc, fish oil, grape seed extract, primrose oil.. and some others.. this acne has just got me stumped i dont know how to clear it up.. i've tried everything: binzaclin, proactive, BP, face washes, lotions, organic ance treatment, boots acne treatment, grandpas sulfur soap bar, etc. and nothing has worked yet! it's frustrating!!!

fish oil can cause acne. I take those every so often because when I took them frequently, I would break out like crazy. So dont take the fish oil as often or in your case maybe it would be better not to take any for awhile? :)

ok. i am starting my 8th pack of yaz. this have been good. i still breakout, but not nearly as bad and it was seeming to be getting slightly better each month. i would actually have almost clear skin sometimes. but all of a sudden a few days ago i started getting weird breakouts. i got two large cysts on my chin, which i havent had in a very long time, and i am getting some weird patches. they start out looking like small clogged pores stuck under the skin and then more bumps show up until its this patch of clustered bumpy things. sometimes they are a little itchy. i dont understand. i have been so happy thinking its getting better and then this happens.

I have been pretty bad about eating junk food lately, so maybe that has something to do with it? the cysts are going down fairly quickly, but i can see more small bumps and weird patches forming. i cant figure it out. i was thinking eczema? but i have oily skin and i thought eczema was on dry skin. im so depressed about this. i thought i would finally have nice skin for the summer. i was getting ready to schedule my vbeam for the redness in my face left by a horrible microdermabrasion. now i feel hopeless again. i HATE wearing makeup and i HATE going out looking like this. you think you guys have it bad. try having a permanent red face that only gets worse when i try any kind of acne product on it and i have acne and oily skin and now these weird patches.

im trying to eat very healthy and drink lots of water to see if that helps, but if not i have to try the doxycycline my derm gave me months ago that i havent wanted to try. i hate antibiotics.

i live in a small town and its a 2 hour drive to the nearest dermatologist and the ones i have seen havent been much help. pretty much they say im a tough one cause i am allergic to so much antibiotics and my skin cant handle any topicals. i may have to resort to accutane, but i really dont want to. i dont have severe acne, but it holds me back from doing the things i wanna do. My husband hates seeing me this way and just wants me to not think about it, but thats impossible when you feel like shit about your face.

i dont have a life style where putting on makeup everyday is convenient. i camp and hike and right now i am living in a place with no running water. i still wash my face twice a day and keep up very good hygene tho. but i am not use to wearing makeup so when i try to put it on i just make things look worse plus i feel like makeup will break me out more.

i hate this and dont know what to do.

does anyone know what these bumps could be??

sorry for my long post and all my bitching. i just am so horribly depressed about this new breakout when i thought it was getting better.

I've had a very good experience on Yasmin! I took it a few years ago and although it didn't make my acne worse it didn't make it much better either. I then used Dianette with great success. But Drs here take you off Dianette after a year and I tried Cilest... which made my skin progressively worse, oily, blotchy....so then i tried Yasmin again. Within a week i could notice my skin drying up and becoming even toned....I have been on it for about a year now and I'm still having good results. I use Yasmin and AHA/BHA gel to manage my skin. I only get 1-2 small pimples a month now and often have a couple of months virtually clear!

I can't really explain why it works the 2nd time round... whether it's better at maintaining already better skin (after the Dianette) or whether it's just that I'm a few years older (now 27) and maybe my skin is naturally calming down or hormones have changed a bit now (and therefore the Yasmin has a better effect).

I've been on Yaz for a year and I love it...I got really bad cystic acne when I first started BC and I used Loestrin...but now things have been great...the only thing that I'm worried about is all the lawsuits for Yaz...anyway, here is a link to a chart with all the hormonal info on BC and which ones you should take for acne, it helped me a lot, so I hope it can help yall.

Hey! I am on YAZ birth control and I am just starting my 4th pack. I had very little acne when I started on the pill, and when I first started taking it my acne did get worse. I didn't get tons of pimples, but when I did, I got big red ones. It was horrible! For abotu 3 months, I would also get really red irritating pimples around my lips. I was on proactiv at the time, and it really didnt do much for me, and it just made my skin really dry. I then started trying a clean and clear skin care kit, which made my skin even worse. Around the time of my period, (on the white pills) I would break out alot, and while using the clean and clear advantage, it would take up to 3 or 4 weeks just to get rid of the one pimple!! I know that it takes a couple months or more for acne cleansers to work, but this one was out of control! I got really frusterated, and then started using Carly's Clear and Smooth Skin. IT IS A LIFESAVER! I have very clear skin now, and I am so happy about the way it worked. Not to mention.. my acne cleared up in about a week and a half!!! The only thing about this treatment, is that you can not buy it at stores. You have to get it shipped out of Florida. I would most defintley reccomend this product though! It worked wonders for me, and in barely any time as well! Hope I could help!! :)

I bought that for my daughter years ago and it did nothing...the only thing that works is Yaz plus 50 mgs or more of spiro. And a good skin care routine. I suppose Carleys would work with all of that too...

I have been on Yaz for one month, and my acne is GONE!

I also had severe PMDD symptoms that have disappeared as well.

I was on Accutane for 6 months, and NOTHING CHANGED.

Yaz is amazing, but obviously it only worked for me because my acne was completely due to hormones.

I would only recommend Yaz as an acne treatment if it is very apparent that your acne flares up at the same time each month.

^ I too have PMDD and it DID help with my acne the first time around, but it took about 7-8 months to see consistent results. My skin didn't become perfect but it was MUCH better than when I started. There were times it got worse when I first started, sometimes it just takes time.... I started it again this March after a three month break, my skin is getting better, but very slowly and with lots of bumps in the road. I'm hoping by next month it will start to make a big difference since that'll be 8 months for me.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is to say this: maybe the hormonal imbalances of people with PMDD are better helped by Yaz, but for others it is more detrimental, if that makes sense. We all have different levels and so there may be different BCPs that are better suited for certain imbalances?

I'm on my 11th day of Yaz and there was been absolutely no change in my hormonal acne but I'm going to stick it out. I'm supposed to see the dermatologist again December 14th. I'm 23 and woke up one day about 4 or 5 months ago with red acne bumps all over my chest and neck and sometimes on the side of my boobs. I've never had acne in my life and so far nothing has helped. I have been so frustrated and upset about this, especially because I can't wear any type of low cut shirt because my chest looks so bad. I tried epiduo for 4 weeks along with "sulfacetamide" sodium topical. Next, I tried the antibiotic Doryx which made my acne worse and gave me horrible stomach cramps which I heard was a horrible side effect that means you should get off of it pronto.

Does anyone else have adult acne that showed up out of the blue one day on their face and chest? I really hope Yaz helps.

Hi there... Hmm I feel like we're in a similar situation. I too feel like I just woke up one morning and say an explosion of pimples on my face. My forehead and cheeks initially had tiny dots. Little did I know that they would out of the blue erupt into massive dime sized inflamed pimples. I was initially put on minocycline 2 times a day 100mg by a dermatologist who only saw me for 15 minutes. I got so dizzy a week into it that I stopped taking it. I went to my general practitioner nearly in tears. She saw my face and talk to me for a good hour. She prescribed me Yaz and Doxcycline 100mg 2 times a day. I just finished my first week on Yaz today and I've been on doxycycline for 2 weeks now. Unfortunately I haven't noticed a HUGE change. But I'm so early into it that I'm not expecting to wake up with beautiful skin again. My sister had the same problem when she was my age (22). She was prescribed Yaz and tetracycline. She cleared up in a matter of 3 to 4 months. I really hope Yaz works for us. Try going on an antibiotic so it suppresses any initial breakouts from Yaz. I'm also using Clinique's acne solution regimen alone with their foundation since I'm too embarrassed to go without makeup. Also, I use an aspirin mask about 4 times a week. Mix B/C power and lemon juice and apply on your face for 25 minutes or until dry. I feel like it helps unclog my pores and helps with oily skin. I honestly hope that Yaz is as good as everyone says it is. We have different bodies and react to medication differently. I remember taking 1 pill of Ortho Tri Cyclen a few months back and woke up the next morning with crazy nausea, leg cramps, and stomach pain. I stopped after that 1st pill. I was so scared of starting Yaz initially hoping to God not to experience that again. Thankfully I have yet to feel any issues with Yaz. Hang in there... Hope this helped!

I just wanted to report that I just completed my first month of Yaz and my adult acne has significantly decreased on my face and chest!! (see my old post above) Everyone's bodies respond differently to medication so don't get discouraged and keep trying things until you find something that works for you! This is the first thing that has made a difference for me. Also, my doctor gave me Clindamycin Phosphate Topical solution to use once a day. They are just pads to wipe the affected area with after washing your face and I got 60 days worth for only $10.

My doctor just gave me a new prescription for Zarah which is supposed to be a generic for Yasmin so I'm hoping it works as well as my regular pack of Yaz.

The only bad thing about this birth control is that it is $50 a month even with United Health Care insurance! My old birth control was $10 a month : /

I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclin Lo, and did amazing things for my acne.

@M1N43... My boobs definitely got bigger, but they're two very different sizes. You can't tell when I'm wearing a bra, though.

I also gained weight in other places, and I have stretch marks on my boobs, hips, butt, and inner and outter thighs.

So... Be careful what you wish for. Haha.

I've been on Yaz for a looonnnnng time.

In about a week, I will finish my current pack. And then I'm going to wean off it if it kills me.

I still break out - I've been using retin-a and it has definitely helped, but before then, I still got hormonal acne, cystic-like breakouts around the chin and mouth. It has completely killed my sex drive, and I feel pretty depressed most of the time and sometimes get really teary. I wish I had never started taking it and am terrified of what's going to happen as I wean off. My self-esteem is already shot from battling acne for 15 years!

Ive been on Tri- Sprintec for 12 years and it worked wonders for me the first 11, my acne has now come back. My doctor wanted me on Accutane but i refused since ive been on it twice in my life time already. Now he has prescribed me Yaz, since hearing all the negative reviews from it, it terrifies me to even try it !!! He also told me that Yaz will take 3 months to actually work so if you havent been on it long and havent seen any improvement that may be the reason why wink.png . Good luck with it, let me know how it works out for you, as for me i think im going to wait it out before getting my prescription filled.

I started taking Yaz about 5 weeks ago when I realized that Loestrin was the reason my acne was getting out of control. I had acne as a teen, then started Ortho Tri Cyclen, which helped a bit, but gave me lots of spotting. I switched to Loestrin to try and reduce spotting, but since I didn't have acne issues at the time we didn't discuss that Loestrin has high androgenic activity which is bad for people who are prone to acne (usually). About 4 months after switching to Loestrin my acne started getting out of control, my face was very oily (which I've never had a problem with before), and my periods were almost non-existent (which was awesome). I switched away from chemical face washes right at the same time the acne started coming on, so I didn't realize it was the Loestrin until my acne was pretty bad. I switched to Yaz after doing lots of research, and have not had the best results so far. I know it takes a while (the Loestrin took 4 months to CAUSE acne, so I'm sure it will take a while to CURE the acne), however in the meantime it's made my acne SO much worse. I have several new cystic spots each day, and my cheeks are two pools of red, splotchy, puss-filled seas of sadness. Also, I've had more canker sores than usual, a cyst in my ear lobe and armpit, and a blister on one of my fingers. I've also been experiencing dizziness upon standing, which I know is due to the diuretic effects of the spiro.
I'm noticing a reduction in the oil, which is encouraging, and my chest and back acne (which was mild to begin with) is completely healed (and was healed after 3 weeks of Yaz). I know I must be patient, but I thought I'd share my experience in case it helps anyone else to know there are others experiencing the same symptoms. For now, I think we must just wait it out, don't pick, and moisturize frequently!
Good luck!

it's so interesting how differently we all react to birth control pills. My very non-scientific thought is age may have a lot to do with it. I wouldn't think that, but after getting cystic acne at age 34 and NEVER having cysts before, I'm more convinced age and hormones play a large role.

I tried Ortho TC 7-8 months ago with Sprio. Cleared me up, but I also had bad side effects. I had to stop and sure enough, cysts came back. I'm now back on my old birth control with 75mg of Spiro.

So frustrating because you never know what WILL work, and hope that it just doesn't cause side effects that are worse.

I'm tempted to go on Yaz too, but I've heard all these negative stories and would rather try one thing at a time, hard as it is to be patient.
