Hello everyone!

This is my first post and I'm desperate for help... I've suffered with acne since I was 18. It was moderate/ severe but almost exclusively on my forehead. I finally achieved clear skin with Duac when I was 24. I'm now 26 and it flared up AGAIN in January... Again, moderate/ severe, but this time all over my face.... Cheeks, chin, jawline and forehead were all covered in cysts.

I got some control with Epiduo and oral Trimethoprim, which I'd say has reduced my acne to mild/ moderate.

... My problem is that I'm getting married next year. And I want to feel confident.

..,. So I decided to have one facial a month until the wedding (which is July 2015). I had my first facial on Saturday. My skin has broken out since!!!! Do I persevere with the facials? Will it get better?

I am so sad about this :-(

Facials will bring out ALL the gunk and sometimes it will get better, sometimes it won't. I've done facials 3 times for my acne and each and every time I have broken out worse and never recovered......ever. Not to say this will be the case for you but with congested skin (i mean really congested skin), a derm may be your best bet. Also, try diet changes if you haven't already.

Thanks both of you! I might try having one more, and if it flares again I'll forget it and ask to be referred to a derm. Really don't want roaccutane though, I want to start a family soon! :-(

Hi rap1408,

Very sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your facial. As an esthetician I can tell you it is because your skin care professional used the wrong products for your skin. Sometimes it can be very hard to know if a product will cause a client to break out - but it should not happen if the products were well chosen.

Unfortunately it happens often and people come to expect it, but a good facial should calm your skin, not aggravate it (the redness from the extractions is almost impossible to avoid, but it should be temporary and subside within an hour or two after the facial as long as your esthetician isn't too aggressive).

Unqualified estheticians will tell you that if you break out, it's because your skin is "purging" and that the facial brought the acne to the surface. This is not how acne works and if you break out immediately following a facial it is because of the products or the procedure.

Again, even very good estheticians can get it wrong on the first try because each person has unique skin and will react differently. But, if you otherwise liked your facialist, let them know about your reaction and ask if they can use different products. If they tell you that breaking out is normal after facials, then seek another facialist.

Best of luck to you and congrats on your wedding!

Below is what I do to keep my skin clear:
No sugar at all.
Eat lots of wholegrain, seeds & nuts, pulses, vegetables, lean protein
Drink green tea and plenty of water.
Cleanse every night with a muslin cloth and water (any gentle cleanser would be fine, keep it simple) and follow up with pure chimp super one.
Good luck getting clear skin
