Hello. I'm a 36 year old male and I've had my acne under control for over a decade now. I had stopped thinking about my skin long ago. I barely get zits anymore and when I do they're small and not a big deal at all. Well over a month back that unfortunately changed as I got this insane zit following a bad flare up out of nowhere. It started as a really large bump that stayed under the skin. It wouldn't reach the surface and it was like that for ages, maybe for weeks, maybe a full month, I ignored it. Anyway it gradually surfaced, I actually pushed it, maybe this was a mistake. The size of the thing was absolutely absurd and the skin around it was elevated, too, like a mini pyramid. The diameter of elevation was maybe about an inch. It was the biggest spot/nodule/cyst/whatever-it's-called that I've ever had in my life by far.

Anyway after a lot of squeezing white pus finally came out. That was a big relief to me as I figured it was finally beginning to end. It wasn't over though so the next day I squeezed it again, and again loads of white pus came out and it got smaller. The following day same deal, squeezed, lots of pus and it got smaller. The skin became flat-ish but not completely. There was this pink skin bump left on top and it doesn't scab, I'm worried that it's a hypertrophic scar. It's been two weeks now since it flattened to this level. It's soft to the touch and can be flattened easily when it's empty. When empty it feels like slightly raised skin. Now here's the worst thing: every single day it keeps getting filled with white pus. Every day I press it and more pus comes out. The pus doesn't come to a head either, it seems to dissipate around the area. I'm worried that maybe this is a collagen scar and it's blocked my pores or something... but it's probably not normal for that much pus to be produced every day right?

What on earth is this thing? I've never in my life had a spot like this that just keeps getting filled with pus daily. I don't burst the damn thing either to get rid of the pus, I just press a bit and it squeezes out quite easily. It's disgusting. What the hell should I do? Have you ever had acne that keeps filling with pus in the same place over and over again? I sure as hell haven't until now. It's all the more weird because as stated I haven't had severe acne problems in a decade. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Will it fix on its own eventually? If so how long? Thank you.

I have a sneaking suspicion it could be an ingrown hair. They can act really weird, and can release pus and stuff and masquerade as a zit.

BP + AHA can help treat them really well. Tried that?

Hi thank you for your reply Dan. How should I use them? I've never used either before. Do I just rub both of them at once on top or what? What percentage solution should I get? Cheers.

If you're just treating a spot or two at a time, you can use the BP on there. Wait for it to dry. Then use the AHA on there.

Start with once a day since you're new to BP. And if it stings too much when you put the AHA on there, you might need to wait a couple weeks and only use the BP until your skin is ready for AHA.

And otherwise you want to leave the spot completely untouched. Never ever pick whatsoever.

Let me know how it goes. I know by personal experience that if it is an ingrown hair, this will work.

Hey Dan, I started taking Augmentin antibiotic for it and it seems to have done the trick. I guess it was just a really bad staph infection (boil) and super persistent. Thankfully it hasn't produced any pus in days now and it's completely flattened and much smaller now, gone to scab formation, no hypertrophic scarring. There doesn't appear to be any ingrown hair there, stubble is growing out fine in that area. I'm super relieved. Gah I'm glad that bullshit is over with lol... hope I'm not speaking too soon though, fingers cross. Anyway thanks for your help, tc.

Wow, a staph infection. Interesting. Well, I'm glad you got a proper diagnosis and killed it. Good work. And thanks for letting us know.

@aaguy Weird, I started developing these same boils this year. I had been clear due to BP regimen for 4 years and then I got this exact same boil randomly in March. It has led to beard-loss in that region (maybe permanent). I didn't squeeze on it ever and it would leak a bit on it's own after 1.5 months or so, but in very minute amounts. It went away after almost 3 months on it's own (I was slathering it with BP or anti fungal shampoos) but I believe this boil may have led to scarring and hair may never grow back in that region again. I have attached some pics of the aftermath. Did you lose beard-hair too in that region?

Just 2 weeks ago, I got 2 more of these boils, this time near my jaw line so I am starting to get concerned because i think it leads to scarring and kills hair follicles. Upon some heavy research, I have found that it could either be bacterial (Folliculitis Declavans - which apparently has no cure and antibiotics may merely manage it) or a fungal infection like ring worm (in which case we may need oral antifungals). The issue is, these boils need to be cultured to determine if the

Pics

The first two pics under my neck show the aftermath of the boil that developed in March and went away in May - just empty gaps left and i'm not sure if hair will ever grow back (it's been 6 months since, pic is from few days ago). In the first pic, you can also see one of the two new boils that has started to form 2 weeks ago (this is the red inflamed region next close to my jaw in the upper half).

The third pic shows the second most recent and much bigger boil which is starting to form with the exact same description you outlined and the one I got in March -it's lumpy and huge. Ignore the yellow (i was trying out something herbal lol).

As for the antibiotics, I was on doxycycline and minocycline for 2 years straight and I think they led to more severe issues (one of them being these boils). Only BP saved my skin later. From my experience, antibiotics are a temporary fix but they have always made infections a lot worse for me after I stop using them.

If anyone dealt with these, please let me know and would appreciate any advice.

Hmmm, you're right, I do seem to have lost some facial hair in that area. That sucks but oh well, I'm just glad this thing finally died. I shave almost daily so don't care that much as my facial hair sucks anyway. Here's what the area currently looks like. As you can see it's flattened and currently healing. I'm glad that thing is gone and my skin has gone back to normal because I swear that was the worst spot I've ever had in my life. It took me back to over a decade ago when I had terrible acne, God I hated that bullshit so much. Oh well, good riddance, I hope I stay clear.
