Hi everyone,
I take a medication (methotrexate) for a chronic disease that causes cystic acne but only when I eat sugar or processed foods and possibly dairy. I've managed to keep my skin completely clear by eating very cleanly but it's making it very difficult to socialise at times & I can't imagine I'll be able to go the rest of my life without enjoying a treat. The trouble is my acne causes scaring.
Antibiotics worked perfectly and I could eat whatever I wanted but they are not a long-term cure for obvious reasons.
I hoped that I could go back on Accutane (I had 3 course in my teens and early twenties before developing my chronic disease) in order to hopefully wipe it out for good but my dermatologist said no because my acne is currently non-existent due to my clean eating.
When I take a lower dose of methotrexate I don't get any acne and can eat anything. However, when the dose hits a certain level the acne appears if my diet is not 100% perfect. I'm currently still suffering after having a couple of slices of bacon to celebrate the new year.
I wondered if anyone had any success with treating acne caused by a long-term medication that you can't stop taking?
Thanks for any help or advice!
5 hours ago, Dan said:That's such a tough one. When I researched medications that cause acne, the only thing they ever say is that acne clears once the medication is stopped.
Is there any other medication you could use for your condition perhaps? Might be worth a chat with your doc.
Hi Dan & thanks for your reply! Yeah, you're correct, there are alternatives but they are extremely expensive in comparison to my current drug. It wouldn't matter too much at the moment as the medication would be free in the country thatI'm currently working in but it will be a problem when I move.
I've actually just managed to persuade my dermatologist to prescribe me Accutane as I had to temporarilyincrease my Methotrexate dose & so an extremely clean diet was no longer enough to keep the cystic acne at bay.
I've been prescribed 20mg daily so I'll see how that goes & leave updates here. From what I've read, it will probably work but I'll need to be on it for quite some time in order to hopefully 'cure' it.
