That and I feel like he prescribes the same things to everyone with acne (no matter how mild or severe). My dermatologist would probably disapprove, however, I feel like my skin isn't going to heal if I follow his regimen on a daily basis.
2) I don't take accutane, because my acne isn't that severe. That and my acne has nothing to do with genes or the way body works, it's just because I managed to ruin my skin barrier (by over-exfoliating). I did ask for accutane my dematologist wouldn't prescribe it to me, because my acne is fairly mild.
So far I have changed my regimen slightly, instead of totally stopping Differin and Clindamycin I am going to use it when I really need it. For example, when I get a lot of clogged pores or pimples. Right now my skin is decently clogged so I am going to use Differin and Clindamycin till it calms down a little bit. Then, I will focus back to hydrating and repairing my skin.
Can you see another dermatologist? It sounds like this one is not proactive enough for you. Also, I thought Accutane is supposed to change the composition of your pores. So wouldnt that help you even if your acne is not considered severe?
Ugh!! I am having an awful acne flare up when I finally thought it might be getting better.
Why me?! I went to the dermatologist today and she only gave me shots on my chin. She said the ones on the side of my face are not big enough. :\
She also prescribed a few topicals. Today has just been a crummy day.
Birth control pills (and antibiotics) can cause fungal outbreaks on skin. Try an antifungal cream - clotrimazole is a good general anti-fungal cream. Do you have a white tongue ? do you have dandruff ? If you have one or both of these, get back to me and I can provide you with more specific information.

Sorry for late reply, haven't been active on this site because of school. I can't because other dermatologists live far from me, and a good portion of them aren't really covered by health insurance. Accutane actually works by reducing sebum levels and it's usually used to treat cystic acne. So far I haven't had any cystic acne, and I do not produce an excess amount of sebum. Not sure about the composition of pores thing, will check more about it later. Recently I've been feeling very stressed about school and life in general (which obviously isn't great for the skin), and some blemishes are starting to appear again. I feel like my skin is hopeless at this point, I don't know what to do anymore. I haven't been feeling this down in ages, I just want my skin problems to be over.

Yes I began getting dandruff when I stopped the birth control and finally got it under control.
It has been gradually getting better. I have nothing on my forhead anymore and the acne is less red and frequent now, thank goodness. Birth control and spirolactone work but it just takes so long. I wish it worked over night but I am happy to see improvements now.
Okay, I am looking at the older pictures and freaking out about how bad it had been lol. It makes me realized how much better it really is now.

Apply Lamisil (which contains terbenafine) antifungal cream to the affected areas. That wlil sppeed up the process of recovery, because you probably have fungal acne from taking the birth control pills. Dandruff is caused by malasezzia fungus, and that fungus is probably causing the "acne": on your face.
Also use an antidandruff shampoo, on your hair, if not doing that already.
And stop taking birth control pills, if that is possible. They will be making the problem worse.
Topical antifungal creams are COMPLETELY safe.

Hm... Well that is interesting but I am hesistent because I feel like my acne is really clearing up now as it had before on these medications.I have no acneon my forhead anymore and since taking BC pills and using anti-dandruff shampoo my dandruff went away. I feel like it has actually helped.
I will ask my dermatologist about the antifungal cream and see what she says.
OK. If the antidandruff shampoo cleared the problem, then the acne was fungal - antidandruff shampoo is antifungal. Dandruff is caused by the malasezzia fungus, which also causes acne.
Birth control pills can cause fungal acne... but not always...
Be aware that most dermatologist d not know anything about fungal acne, and most will not accept that it exists in otherwise healthy people.
You could apply the antifungal cream to the remaining areas wih acne, and keep taking the birth control pills... Topical antifungal creams are COMPLETELY SAFE so you have nothing to lose by applying antifungal cream to the remaining areas with acne.
Your call....
I can totally remember this same feeling. I didchoose acutane. It did work. Until I stopped taking it. My problem was OIL. Tons of it! All the time. So the acutane did stop that temporarily. The only permanent relief I was able to get was cleaning up my diet. Really clean! I was just talking with someone about their acne the other day and had totally forgotten about how it used to really plague me. Its been years now and I attribute the change in diet and lifestyle completely.
I am now a certified Integrative healthcare practitioner andId be happy to work with you to get to the root cause of your imbalance.
U can dm me thru instagram or fb.

But my breakouts only began after I stopped taking birth control and then began to clear up again when I got back on it.

OK, that means that there was a hormonal cause.
But, note that hormonal causes can cause fungal acne (because of increased sebum). Birth control pills can cause fungal acne, but they can also temporarily control it because birth control pills reduce sebum production and malassezia fungal acne fees on sebum.
I would still apply the Lamisil (terbenafine cream) and see if that controls the "acne". I think it will.

Of course it was hormonal. That is why I called it PCOS acne. Birth control pills controlled it for years before I got off them for 6 months and then getting back on caused a slow recovery.

My point is that hormone problems can cause fungal acne and/or ordinary acne. If one has a hormonal problem, do not automatically assume that the acne is ordinary acne. The acne may be caused by fungus, and it needs to be treated accordingly (by applying topical antifungal creams etc).
