I feel like I have tried absolutely everything for my skin and yet I still have acne. I have tried what feels like all of the OTC face washes and all of them just seem to dry out my skin and make my acne worse. Last year I went on Tri-Sprintec thinking that it would finally get rid of my acne but I couldn't have been more wrong. It gave me horrible cystic acne for months which has calmed down now but I still feel that my acne is worse than when I started it. I recently found Kate Somerville acne products which are less irritating but I still haven't really seen results with them which is disappointing since they are so expensive. I have tried changing my diet; no dairy, no caffeine, limiting sugar, even going vegan, none of which seemed to make a real difference. Going vegan actually made my acne worse. Currently, I use Kate Somerville acne wash and ponds lotion in the morning. I have primer with SPF that I put on before I apply powder foundation for the day. At night I use neutrogena salyclic acid oil-free acne wash, ACV and tea tree oil toner, and jojoba oil and juniper berry oil as my "lotion." I use Kate Somerville spot treatment while I sleep. Most nights I sleep with my hair up, I change my pillow case twice a week, and I wash my makeup brushes once a week. I also take Zinc, Elderberry, and Holy Basil daily. I workout about 5 times a week and I eat very healthy. At this point I really don't know how I still have acne and it frustrates me to no end. I'm terrified to go see a dermatologist because I have very sensitive skin and I feel like the products they give me will only irritate my face. I also don't want to go on antibiotics because they seem like a temporary solution and you cannot be on them forever. Does anyone have any suggestions or any actual positive experiences with a dermatologist?? Really looking for anything at this point because I have lost all hope...

I would go see a dermatologist. You can always discuss the diffetent options for you and tell them if you feel it isnt right for you. Just tell them you are worried that the products will irritate your skin and I'm sure they will create the right plan for you. Seeing as though the dieting didnt help a lot your acne might be linked to hormones which can be fixed with different medicines. (Don't trust me too much on this. I'm no professional, I could easily be wrong)

I'm sure you will clear up, dont lose hope.

Will the whole "it will get worse before it gets better" thing happen with products that the dermatologist will give me? I really don't think I can handle my acne getting any worse. I am also 20 and most of my acne is on my cheeks. Does anyone else have anything similar?

Hey there,

please try to relax,

I used to suffer with extremely bad depression, OCD and body dysmorphic disorder with my acne. I wouldn't leave the house and eventually stopped going to school. I am now 26 - have a full time job and I am getting married in two years :D.

what I am trying to say is - there is more to life than your acne and I promise with time it will get better. I went to a dermatologist and was prescribed Accutane. It completely cleared my skin and I have been relatively acne free for the past 4 years. I like you was afraid to try anything with my face due to fear of it getting worse but Accutane cleared my skin. It is a long process and it is tough but what you need to look at first is how you feel about yourself and not just your skin. I know exactly how you are feeling - trust me...acne... it really isn't that important (it may seem it to you) but to everyone else who loves you - they just want you to be happy. My advice is think everyday of the positives in your life, what you have and always look forward. Stick to a mild face wash and go and see a dermatologist. All the other things that you are doing - diet etc they are good for your overall health - but go and see a dermatologist and get your acne looked at...however more importantly focus on being happy and the beautiful world that is around you :D - no one is perfect - no skin is flawless - everyone is human.
