Can't get rid of acne and it's just getting worse

I'm 17, male, and have had acne probably since 7th or 8th grade. It wasn't bad back then but over those 6 years it's gotten worse, probably mildly severe . I eventually got it on my back too. For the past couple months, my face had actually gotten fairly clear. I still had acne but not the cysts and big whitheads and gross stuff like that. But for some reason it all came back. That's kind of how it's always been. On and off, on and off. But every time it comes back "on" it's much worse than before. I've been to dermatologists, took their prescriptions, did face peels, none of that made a difference. I'm not doing accutane or whatever it's called because even though it basically always clears your acne, I've heard way too much bad things about it. Home remedies and over the counter stuff have seemed to work better than the dermatologist in my case. But none of it had fixed it, only temporarily helped. The best thing I've found was witch hazel. I find that my biggest overall problem with my acne is that it leaves my face with lots of dead skin. when my acne is bad, my skin is a mix of oily and dry. Does anyone have advice on a routine that will clean AND moisturize my skin? I keep my skin clean, but because if that it ends up being dry, which makes everything worse. I didn't intend for this to be so long lol, sorry

Either you've become resistant to antibiotic or your body is not able to tolerate all that OTC concoctions.

Here's a real simple fix. It ain't a permanent solution but at least it will give you a leg up on your quest for an answer.

First, if it's "cystic" or inflamed acne that hurts when touched, you need to bring down the inflammation as soon as possible, otherwise it will likely leave a scar. So I advise you to take 2 tablets of aspirin or advil and apply analgesic cream or gel (eg. arthritis cream or Vicks VapoRub works pretty well too) until the pain is gone.

Second, your face is already going through a lot of physical and emotional rollercoaster. Don't add to the burden by staying away from toxic crap from the drugstore. As a matter of fact, don't apply anything to your face EXCEPT water, and even that use it only very sparingly. Hence, I recommend washing your face twice a day, morning and night, with water only (no soap, toner, or moisturizer) for the next 2 weeks. If your acne responds well to this new routine, you may slowly reintroduce other topical regimen. Let us know how you've done in 2 weeks. Good luck!

I'll try that, but most of the time when I wash my face with only water, it leaves my skin dry. Any way around that?

For now, I would let your own sebum to provide the missing moisture. You just might not be used to it and your skin is overreacting. But over the next few days, it will readjust to the new routine. Trust me, I (and countless others) have been through this before and it is the best acne regimen available.

Well dude, don't worry to much... It will go away on it's own, or just significantly reduce when you get a litle older, I had SEVERE acne, and it's seems to be going away on it's own. When you get thick facial hair, that's when you should expect it to go away. Males have adult acne very very seldom.
