THERE IS HOPE!! I just wanted to share a little of my acne story. I know the struggle and know that it helps to discuss it. I never suffer much from acne as a pre-teen or teenager. It wasn't until I hit age 21, then BOOM! I didn't know what was going on. It really started to bother me. I was not going out and doing things because of the acne. It's not like my face was covered, but having like 3-4 big cystic bumps on each cheek is enough. Especially since I had never felt with it before. So my heart goes out to any of you that are suffering acne full throttle. I mean all over...
Anywho, as they would go away they were leaving scars and marks. It didn't help I would mess with them some. DON'T DO THAT AS MUCH AS YOU FEEL LIKE YOU SHOULD OR NEED TOO!!! Leave the bumps alone and let them go away. They will. Because once you do get it under control and you've messed with them, you'll then have marks and scars to get rid of.
So I finally started trying different things. I tried switching my makeup from Ester Lauder to oil and fragrance free makeup. That didn't help. I think my clarisonic which I love! I then started to get chemical peels, not by a dermatologist, but an esthetician. Which was definitely a mistake. Here I wasn't getting peels thinking it would help, but I continued to break out so I was still getting marks. It was a complete waste of money. My husband and I moved to Iowa, and as we were in process of moving in 2014-2015. I was still having these break outs. Very discouraging. I then decided it was time to seek a dermatologist in about March of 2015. At that time i had already started to look on the internet at prescription medications because I was taking care of my skin, so I knew there was an underlying issue. He prescribed me Adapalene (topical medication) that didn't really help. Not by itself. I gave it til May like he said, then decided to seek another derm. He is still my derm as of today. As soon as he saw me he knew it was a hormone thing. He prescribed me Spironolactone and an antibiotic. I was prescribed 100mg a day, but only took 50mg. I don't like to medications as it is , and the side effects didn't sound pleasant.
BUT I rated to see improvement. I stopped having random breakouts. It felt good. Then a few months back, I hit plateau. The dosage (50mg) wasn't enough anymore. So I simply upped It to 75mg. Since then, I've not really had more cheek breakouts, just the occasional period pimples my chin. It seems to be doing the job. I still use a topical agent, aczone. And I still take my antibiotic twice a week, two days in a row. For the most part, I'm really happy with my skin. At some point tho, I do wanna wean myself off the medication. My husband and I aren talking children, and unfortunately you can't take Spiro while pregnant. So hopefully when that happens, my face won't spaz.
I do believe that stress can contribute to breaking out. Because it releases a hormone that makes skin oily. And it seemed when I'd stress I break out more. No matter what studies say.. I also work out 5-6 days a week and exercise is suppose to be good to keep acne under control.
Hope this helps someone...
