What is causing my acne?

I'm having a really hard time determining what causes it, i've tried various topical creams and washes since I was about 15! I think back then it was the normal hormonal craziness that was going on but since then it's continued. I'm now 21, in university, and yes facing a lot of stress. I never had it this bad though and i'm in my fourth year so i'm kind of used to the stress by now! I only have mild acne but its a new pimple or two each day that take forever to go away. I use a mild cleanser, toner, and moisturizer with 2% salicylic acid spot treatment but it doesn't seem to be keeping my acne at bay. My acne mostly consists of solo red bumps and the occasional white head, nothing too crazy but still annoying. I did the little acne.org test and various other quizzes but I get a range of answers from hormonal to stress to diet. I know this is a super vague question and it changes for everyone but that's why I wanted to pose it to you guys. How do I tell what's causing it so I can fix it?

Stress is known to cause worsening of acne, but I have not seen any scientific research finding that stress induces acne from clear skin.
"Hormonal" acne and diet induced acne is the same thing.

Let me rephrase,"Hormonal" acne and diet induced acne is the same thing in humans but not in trolls and bridges.

Thank you, this wasn't helpful at all. My first introduction to the website and you can't even give me a suggestion?

If you want to try to combat this the natural ways, try reducing stress and giving up a processed diet. Many people don't want to sacrifice but if you're really intent on helping your skin, this is the first stop to see if it works for you. Next, if you only get one or 2 pimples at a time, then it may not be worth burning the crap out of your skin with BP. Facials could help. In all honesty, with as mild as your acne is, i would give diet and lifestyle changes a few months before subjecting yourself to harsh topicals which have the ability to make things that much worse.
