So this is pretty much a useless thread...I'm just venting about my dermatologist experience, if you want feel free to vent as well! Although I had read all about derms on this site, that essentially they are useless, I was so fed up with having to wear turtle necks to cover my body acne, and it had been almost a year. I held out some hope that a derm could help, so since I didn't have insurance I paid out of pocket (expensive and im 15) and guess what the derm said?!!!!!!! He literally spent 3 mins with me and my parents (I wouldve lashed out at him if my parents hadnt been there) and said to use BP....I'm like are you fucking serious?!!!! ANY person who has ever ever had any acne would already know that! I spent 80 bucks for him to tell me to use BP! also he said that diets and your lifestyle had nothing to do with it when my mom asked... HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU?!! We were also talking about yeast overgrowth and he said that diets have nothing to do with it! really? gawd I hate him.
Oh man!
i had a rant before about derms because, well... I just don't understand what they study! Pretty much every skin problem I can think of; acne, scarring, acne-scarring atopic dermititis, seb derm, chronic derm, rosacea, hyper pigmentation, verrucae, warts..
NONE of them have a cure! They literally only have things that can ease the symptoms or gradually improve them. I mean.. What exactly do they study and practice? xD
I have had terrible derm experiences too! For years I went to different dermatologists and in hindsight, after all the bills and appointments and prescriptions and bullshit, I was able to teach myself and eventually help myself much better than they ever did. The thing I'm most pissed about is that when I was in high school my derm put me on antibiotics for like 3 years and to this day I have to take a probiotic pill every morning. It really messed me up... None of them care to mention side effects, and I was so young, I had no idea. And then recently after I gave up on derms entirely, I had to beg my primary care physician for the only prescription that ever made a difference over the course of a decade of all that shit. And it didn't even come from a derm. I'm very sorry for anyone here who has experienced such careless doctors as I have. Even to the most well educated or well intentioned doctors, you're mostly just a name on a chart or a check in their pocket. That being said I'm more of a home remedy style girl these days Thanks for the rant, I'm totally jaded about this!
I knew I wasn't alone! lol I guess I'm pretty lucky though, considering I haven't wasted a ton of money on derms since I was born in the internet age! lol I know I don't have it that bad considering I'm 15 and most of it is probably hormonal and genetics (dad currently has rosacea which was just diagnosed and mom used to have body acne like me) But still it's really upsetting...and REALLY? they say that your diet and lifestyle has nothing to do with it? thats the biggest lie I've ever heard! I'm like 70% sure that my acne is caused by my lack of exercise, lack of water, and very poor diet. And I know what I am talking about considering my mom is a health nut, and my grandmother is a retired nurse (who's in her late 70's but looks like she's as young as my mom, she takes EXCELLENT care of herself) so yeah...but really all I wanted to know whether it was acne or yeast overgrowth which I found out is acne after taking a yeast pill lol
You could be right about your diet. I had moderate acne when I was 13-15, and went on the Atkins diet when I was 15 to lose weight. I lost 50lbs and my acne went away almost completely (an unexpected but welcome side effect) within something like 3 months. Before that I was eating tons of starches and drinking almost nothing but milk. Now that I'm 27 and had 2 kids, diet seems to have no effect...I can still get crappy skin sometimes even if I am eating great. Acne is pure evil
I've had a pretty crappy experience as well. I went to one derm and all she did was look at my face for a few seconds and then wrote which products I should buy. She didn't even ask me anything, the stay was like 2 minutes. It almost felt like she was paid to advertise those products. I bought them, even though to me they didn't seem like the type of products that would help, paid around $50 for them and gave them a month. They didn't work and needless to say, I never went back to her.
