I do not think low fat high sugar is a diet, well it is not something you want to do, unless you want diabetes and heart attack.. Sugar is a carbohydrate but one of many, not all carbohydrates is sugar. Some can be metabolized into glucose, but that is a different story.
For acne eat this:
Low glycemic carbohydrates, low in saturated fat, no dairy. Small amounts of fruits and berries in the beginning, watch out for seeds and nuts in also in the beginning. And stick with the diet, it will take some time.
Easiest way is http://thepaleodiet.com/ with the above recommendations.
Here you can read up on carbs. Go for the fiber

Anyone had any luck with the various candida diets floating around the internet? low fat high sugar and high fat low carb seem to be the big players. both of which have failed me miserably - I tried 80-10-10 and also the ketogenic diet... any advice is appreciated

I too am frustrated by all the contradictory diet advice. I have found eating 'paleo' (no grains, dairy, processed food) but also low fruit seems to be best for my skin (so mainly veg and meats). However, after being on this diet for some time i have not felt very well - lack of energy, can't put on weight, heavy feeling in the stomach. When i tried eating more carbs and alot less meat/fat i felt better - more energy, digestive system working better. But then i start getting horrible breakouts on my face. So i am confused also. I don't really enjoy eating meat and feel more right eating higher carb vegan style - but my skin!!! Does this mean i have candida because i can't handle sugar/carbs very well? Is it just detox?? I don't understand???

High GI foods cause Acne aka sugar will cause acne for those that are sensitive to insulin and IGF-1 hormones.
But sugar overall is bad and promotes inflammation thats not something you want to eat anyways. For best results in clearing acne eat an antiinflammatory diet thats the best diet out there... so lots of good fats like omega 3s fish oil, virgin coconut oil, organic butter, virgin olive oil and egg yolks are example of the best healthy fats that help reduce inflammation and acne. Eat broccoli, spinach, celery etc.
Rly all I can say is without a doubt INSULIN AND IGF-1 hormones will cause Acne if you are sensitive to such things.... in the end it comes down to genetics. Acne is 50% genetics and 50% enviroment, diet etc.
The highest carb intake advice I ever got from a professional is 40-30-30.
I think it's also knowing if you're sensitive to some foods. For me it is milk and eggs for example so I don't eat those at all if possible.
Below is the best guideline I follow. The green is what you should eat, the red is what you should avoid. Select organic products when possible.
Also, eat as much as your body needs. Unlike with processed foods, when you eat "real" food your body knows when it's had enough.
CARBOHYDRATE
- The majority of your carbohydrates should be low sugar vegetables that are raw or lightly cooked.
- Include two or three fresh, whole fruits (not juice) each day.
- Occasionally, include starchy carbs (whole grains, potatoes, brown rice, etc...).
- Combine carbs with protein and fats to slow sugar absorption.
- Refined/processed carbohydrates, including all sugar/white flour products.
- Artificial sweeteners
PROTEIN
- Grass-fed beef
- Organic, free-range poultry
- Whole, raw or cultured dairy products (kefir, greek yoghurt, fermented drinks, goat cheese)
- Organic, free-range eggs
- Low-toxicity seafood
- Vegetarian protein (hemp, chia, pumpkin seeds, nuts, legumes)
- Soy (unless organic, fermented)
- Farmed seafood
- Low-fat, nonfat and other manipulated dairy products,
FAT
- Incorporate good sources of fat into your diet:
- Nuts and seeds
- Raw, cold-pressed oils from nuts and seeds (These oils are in dark containers and refrigerated. Avoid the oils in clear plastic bottles on the grocery store shelf.)
- Cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil
- Butter and other raw dairy fats
- Raw, organic coconut oil
- Avocado
- Hydrogenated and
- partially-hydrogenated fats
- Highly processed vegetable oils
- Trans-fats
- Fried foods

The big food fashions like candida diet and paleo diet and atkins and whatever are mostly based on pseudo-science and are a money maker for a their inventors. The only thing the paleo diet gets right is that it cuts down on processed foods. Other than that, just accept that you're not a prehistoric human, your body is different and the food around you is different.
Realistically speaking, people in the Paleolithic era lived to the age of about 30 if they were very lucky, and on the days they didn't just starve all day cause there was no food, they mostly ate roots and hard leaves and maybe some berries. They sometimes managed to get an animal a bigger predator killed and had whatever was left over, mostly organs and bones, not big lean steaks and tuna. Kale and spinach and avocados and blueberries etc were simply not a thing... most of them didn't exist in the form we know now, because we selectively bread them to be edible for humans.
