Hi, First time writing on a forum. Pass year I've been suffering from clogged pores esp on cheeks. There are occasional breakouts as well.
Just a little background. The clogging started after moving to Australia from a highly humid country. I'm not entirely sure if the dryness is causing the clogging. I've never had clogged pores.A little lost here! Please help! How should I treat my skin?
Thanks
I've tried Peter Thomas roth's salicylic wash and it dried out my skin pretty bad. Now I'm using philosophy's purity facial wash which has calm my skin but didn't get rid of the clogged pores. I noticed I can't use any acne related products as well. It dries out my skin.
A leave-on BHA would work better. With medicated washes, the active ingredients are going down the drain. They aren't on your skin long enough to be very effective. Yeah, skin dryness is a common side effect and complaint of most acne products and medicines including Accutane, so it's best to follow up with a noncomedogenic moisturizer. Neutrogena, CerAve, and Cetaphil are all trusted brands.
I wouldn't recommend any type of scrub--and I know this is the first thing you want to do when you have so many clogged pores. You just want to get them out! Unfortunately, this type of acne takes time to treat and heal. The key is to be gentle. I second (third?) the BHA treatment. I went from my entire face covered to about...half covered? (Then again I'm dealing with unstable hormones due to birth control)
Anyway, this type of acne is very common to those who live in more humid climates and have oily skin (like me.) The only acne-fighting ingredient I am using on my skin is BHA 2%. Paula's Choice has a weekly 4% BHA that you may be interested in. Some people can stand to use it twice a week, but just be careful. Know what your skin can handle and what it can't. Apply that rule to everything you apply on your face too. If you get instant tightness, a tingling or obvious pulling sensation on the skin, chances are the product is not for you. Your acne could also be due to "cosmetics." In other words, makeup or simply the cosmetics you use on your face. Something may not be agreeing with you. When you are constructing your routine, use products that are non-irritating, and don't just trust the labeling. Read the back of the bottle for the list of ingredients. One of the major acne-causing ingredients is fragrance. It's best to avoid it entirely, however, if you see fragrance near the bottom of the list--there's not going to be a whole lot of that in there to really freak out your skin. Still, I would avoid it along with alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate. Sodium laureth sulfate is safe though (this is used as a mild detergent and is not stripping like sodium lauryl sulfate).
So, I realize I unloaded a bunch of information on you, and I'm sorry for that. I just know what you're going through. It sucks but it's not the end of the world. You will get clear. A good resource for reviews is Beautypedia. I usually check the reviews before buying any new product. It is very helpful. Here's a link. Good luck! http://www.paulaschoice.com/beautypedia
