Holiday Skin! Vitamin D And Chlorine

Hey guys,

So I recently went on a weeks holiday to Devon, (a coastal area in the UK), where it was very sunny and warm. During my time there I think I went swimming about 3 times in a public pool, now, coming back from this holiday I have noticed some what of an improvement in my skin.

I was wondering whether this is a coincidence or the vitamin D from the sun - (as I usually don't spend as much time out in the sun as I did the past week) and/or the chlorine (and whatever other chemicals are in the swimming pool) which helped with my skin...

Does anyone have experience with vitamin D deficiency affecting their acne, I don't know whether I am deficient in vit D or not but it could be possible. And also with the swimming.

This is just a shot out in the dark I guess... I'm looking for anything to help me out. Should I consider taking up swimming and having vitamin D supplements?

What are your thoughts and experiences?

Hi amy27,

I had been told that I was deficient in vitamin d after blood tests. My gp prescribed me vitamin d3 for a few weeks. That brings up the vit D levels, but it doesnt alleviate spots. But doxycline makes me clear after a few months on it. I took doxy from August 2014 to March 2015. It makes me 100% clear. But sadly it came back in May after holidays in Italy, partly because I didn't choose the body lotion wisely for the hot wheather. It was only on my body. Then I did something unwise again by eating spicy food which gives me horrible 5 to 6 spots around my mouth. Shell fish like prawns are trouble for me.

I have been referred to derm who suggested I should go on roaccutance. I am scare of taking this drug after reading all these side affects like depression, hair loss and premature aging. So he gave me lymecycline and it seem to be helping for my back and chest. Spots are almost gone. I still got a few inflammed ones on face. I use make up to cover. But it is still bothering me. Before I use an expensive vitamin c serum which helps loads with my red marks. But it costs like £70 for 30ml. I hate to spend that much again for Superficial skin ;)

So I bought a vitamin c powder from Holland and Barrett. And I have been experimenting with receives from Internet sites like reddit, hoping it works same as expensive serum for red pigmentation. I do take loads of supplements, garlic peels, b complex, magnesium, cod liver oil and zinc. I will probably remove b complex as I read that can cause acne. I am now adding green teas to my diet and so far I am enjoying the drinks. It has been 1 weeks I started drinking it. I may supplement with green tea pills as well in case my body respond well to it.

My derm prescribed me Anthelios AC SPF 30 and told me to use it whenever I go out of the house. He also specifically told me not to tan this year because the sun is really damaging especially to acne prone skin, it will make your skin look better for a few days, while it prepares a new breakout.
