I've been using Neutrogena acne kit for about a month now. First week my skin looked amazing then my skin broke out worse then it ever has before the next 2 weeks after that. I assumed this to be purging and for the next week after that my skin looked amazing and clear as well. It just seems I can't go for more than a week as I woke up this morning with another breakout in almost the exact same spots my previous acne was. I don't know what to do anymore and I'm just getting depressed. I eat very clean because I'm an athlete, drink a ton of water, drink tea and change my sheets and all of that. I don't know what the hell to do anymore. My routine is, 1.Wash face with salcylic acid cleanser for about 30 seconds, 2. put benzoyl peroxide lotion on and wait to dry, 3. use cetaphil moisturizing cream. I don't see what could possibly be wrong with any of this. Is it possible to still get breakout a month after starting to treat with benzoyl peroixde?
I've been struggling with my acne for such a long time (about 3 years and im 16 years old) and what might be the best would be going to a dermatologist. What mine told me was that soaps made specifically for acne completely strip the skin of all their natural oils and just dry it all out which isn't good at all and will make the skin over produce oils to compensate. So it might be the soap you're using or it could be bacteria under your skin and you might need antibiotics. I eat very healthy too, excersize regularly, and (I thought) had a very good regimen for cleaning my face. But I finally went to my derm and found out I was using too strong of soap, and that the main problem was bacterial trapped under my skin which made it become inflammed. So far I've been on minocycline for about a month and a half and I think antibiotics are the best way to go. But either way if you're stuck and don't know what to do definitely go to a doctor who knows what they're talking about. It might be a little pricey but is definitely worth it in the long run. Hope this helped at all
I'd drop the salcylic acid wash and use something non medicated and gentle. Even 30 seconds is too much time to use a cleanser. All your really doing is prepping skin for the BP.

Antibiotics are not really a long term solution though. I was on them about 15 years ago and had the clearest skin I've ever had but it only lasted about 4-5 months before my skin overcame them.

What cleanser would you recommend?
I'm guessing you live in the US? You are spoilt for choose really. Have a look at the reviews. Cetaphil seems to be popular. The main thing is to just get your face ready for the BP. 10 seconds off gentle washing is all it takes just to prep your skin to let the BP penetrate easier. The BP is key to this regimen, I can't stress that enough. Cleansers and moisturisers are imo a personal choose and different for everyone. Try to find one of each that agree with you and stick with them. Try not to switch products too much and don't switch two at a time as it might be hard to pin point what might be causing you grief if you do breakout.
I've using this regimen since 2000 and have used many products and many variations. But its the BP that kills the bacteria if you lay the path for it to work (so to speak) Cleansers are no more than a skin prep and moisturiser are no more than to help with dryness that the BP causes. Sometimes you can over think things.
Touch wood if it does work out for you then you can then start to tweak things once you get to know your own skin.
Hope that helped;)
Hi FierceQuince,
I have read your initial post and it appears that you actually have a reasonable treatment for your skin. Every acne treatment in the market really does take time to work before you even see any significant results. Most people who are not able to find the right treatment do not wait out for the products to work or they tend to rub their skin which aggravates the acne (usually they towel dry their face or they rub the products vigorously). While some see great results in a few days, some will take up to three months before they notice any change on their skin. So before you give up on your acne treatment, wait it out for a couple of more weeks before jumping into another treatment for your skin and see how it works. Good luck!

Neutrogena is really famous but I don't think its acne kit is efficient cause I already tried it but I was disappointed...
What else should I try?
That's what I was thinking as well. For the most part my skin is looking better I would say and my breakouts and acne are somewhat under control. on a scale of 1-10 through the first month of this treatment I would give it about a 5. I'm almost at the point to go to the derm. I expect a clindamycin/benzoyl combo. Do you think this will
help get rid of the remaining acne that Neutrogena hasn't been able to? I also have my skepticism of neutrogena because it just seems like an unreliable company to me and I'm not sure why. If the derm is an option would you recommend that?
Not all products will work for you. Plus you're using way too many products with harsh chemicals. That can cause irritation resulting to acne. What worked for me is eating broccoli, spinach, caluiflower, onions and carrots everyday. It has to be everyday, not every other day, everyday. Along with low carbs (30-60g) and no gluten, better yet no wheat, bread, grains, oats. Also no sweets and nothing processed. My diet consists of meat and vegetables and some carbs like white rice but only a cup or less cause i get light headed sometimes.

I doubt my acne is due to my diet. I'm 17 years old I know for a fact it's just hormonal. I eat healthy anyways I'm an athlete .
