Hi, my 13 year old son has terrible acne and I have no clue how to help him. Everything I look at seems to give conflicting advice. I should mention that we are in the UK in case it is relevant. He always has several huge spots like boils all over his face, as well as smaller pustules and blackheads. He also has acne on his upper back and shoulders, and also his upper chest. Not only is this embarrassing for him, the larger spots can be extremely painful. I just don't know where to start. He is under the care of a GP (doctor) who has just prescribed Duac once daily gel which we will begin tonight, but I would appreciate some advice as to some basic self-care so we can manage the problem more effectively. I'm not looking for a cure obviously, but even a small improvement would be great. He has other medical issues (Asperger Syndrome and ME/CFS) so is already quite depressed and this is getting him down even more. I hope you can help. Thank you.xx
Yeah autism and acne are not a fun mix. My son also has both issues, although he only inherited the latter from me. We're doing the Acne.Org Regimen with good (though nowhere near perfect!) results. Of course I have to apply the BP on both his face and back every night. I just don't trust him to do a good enough job. He didn't like it at first but now he tolerates the products on his skin and they are helping. He has a lot of PIH on his back and cheeks but this will fade with time. We're also treating the PIH with 10% glycolic acid. It really helped his forehead! The cheek PIH seems a bit more stubborn and is responding slower.
If your son can help, I'd encourage it. Before his acne got worse we were using Stridex pads and he could manage these himself. When you get his skin routine established, maybe you could set up a picture step-by-step for him to follow.
Feel free to PM me. I know exactly what you're going through!
xx
