Sooo... I went ahead and did this stupid test because I was getting really anxious that I have some food intolerance. It came back with eggs and yeast as high. Has anyone else had this? Yeast intolerance. I had moderate sesame, shellfish, chili and tuna too.
So, I go onto their page and they tell me that I should avoid all things with yeast (baker's and brewer's). This includes fermented things. Okay, I get that. However, then they tell me that I shouldn't eat so much sugary foods because it might feed the candida albicans, which is a yeast overgrowth. The problem is, that they are totally unrelated.
Foods (like beer, kombucha, kimchi) have saccharomyces yeast, and candida albicans, pathogenic yeast, is a yeast overgrowth and does not exist in food. Holistic doctors sometimes tries to treat a yeast overgrowth with kefir, kombucha and the likes to beat the 'bad' yeast with 'good' yeast (saccharomyces yeast) that exists in these foods.
So, there is obviously a difference if I am intolerant to a 'protein' in yeast, which is causing an reaction or if I have a yeast overgrowth. In the first case I will have to eliminate kefir and all of it because no matter how good for me or how good it would be for a potential yeast overgrowth it would harm me because of a compound in its structure. Like an allergy.
I am very confused, or they are saying that I am allergic (or intolerant) to ALL yeast. Do you know how many yeast species there is? 1500. They are everywhere. Inside us, candida albicans exists in all of us. Am I allergic to myself then?
I found a page that said that yeast intolerances spring from a yeast overgrowth. There is no evidence of this what so ever. But, if this was true, why would I avoid 'good' yeast too that exists in water kefir and kombucha? What are they saying exactly, that I have a yeast overgrowth (that never has been proven) or that I am intolerant to yeast in foods? If they are saying both, then wouldn't that be a death sentence? Since we all have yeast living in our bodies, I would literally be allergic to myself.
I just don't get this at all. I feel a little irritated with the company because I thought they were legitimate (or as much as could be expected), but can't they even tell apart something so very simple as different species of yeast. Or, am I wrong? Some input would be greatly appreciated.
Here is where I found their info:
https://www.yorktest.com/allergy/yeast/
Also, they say 1 in 3 people have this 'yeast intolerance'
Maybe this is clearer... (allergy and intolerance is about the same concept of course the other is a delayed reaction rather than acute)
"Yeast allergy takes place when a person consumes yeast-containing foods or inhales the spores from the same. On the other hand, yeast infection or candidiasis, is caused by the organism Candida albicans. It is caused as a result of chemical imbalance in the naturally-occurring yeast in the body, as a result of which overgrowth of yeast takes place."
"When a person suffers from yeast allergy, his immune system is not able to react normally to the yeast protein. The immune system fails to recognize the yeast protein as a type of food protein, and mistakes it to be some harmful foreign body. As a result, it produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE), which attack the yeast proteins. They do this by attaching themselves to mast cells (type of white blood cells), which release chemicals called histamines, on contact with yeast proteins. The presence of these histamines in the bloodstream causes the allergic reactions we see. "
"Baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, natural yeast, etc. are known to cause yeast allergies. Moreover, C. albicans can also act as a potential allergen, however, this is very rare. Moreover, the role of C. albicans in allergic reactions is not still clear."
Hi -
First of all, I am no expert - but I imagine that the test for food sensitivities is not the same test for yeast overgrowth. Unless they did both, I wouldn't pay much attention to the info they provided for treating an overgrowth of yeast. That being said, it is concerning that they would provide you such contradictory info! If you have problems with thrush or yeast infections, this would suggest a yeast overgrowth which should actually be treated by a health professional. If thrush isn't an issue for you and you have no reason to suspect yeast overgrowth then I really wouldn't worry.
For now - take the results of the "yeast intolerance" at face value and try cutting out all yeasty food and beverages (and eggs) for 4-6 weeks. If you don't see significant improvement in your symptoms, then I would say scrap it and look for other causes.
Yes I am very annoyed at their info page. I don't have any yeast infections, but a theory that started a couple of years ago said that we all have a yeast overgrowth called Candida in our guts causing all sorts of maladies (like 80% of us). However, this has been disputed several times because only someone with a severely compromised immunsystem would get something called systematic candida (in its last stages when we will most likely die soon).
So, what are they really saying that I have this yeast overgrowth? I am a little irritated that I payed so much money for a diagnos that most likely isn't real and if it was can never be treated for no one knows how to treat it (never heard of anyone going on a candida diet and got rid of whatever was ailing them, mostly they stay on it forever with hundreds of supplements which sound so dreadful).
Yep thanks for your input, I have talked with my parents about this but they just look at me like I'm nuts. Like, "haha she is allergic to herself." Yeah well. This is so awesome.
Funny, when I got it I was like oh two things isn't that bad, oh wait. Yeast. What is that in? Oh right, everything!! Haha

Yeah- That's why I am always a little suspicious of claims that they can test for "food sensitivities". Like - what sample did you provide? Did they run a blood test or did they do an allergy test of some kind? I don't see how they could test for these specific intolerances in blood or saliva. It's my understanding that allergies (which are completely different from the more vague 'sensitivities') are tested with a skin patch test. Even so, I've heard those tests are notoriously difficult to interpret, and often times health care providers recommend a process of elimination to identify which foods cause reactions.
You aren't allergic to yourself - you are likely not allergic at all! If you have concerns for a true allergy (not just an 'intolerance'- i.e., you get hives, rashes, upset stomach and other noticable symptoms when you are exposed to certain things), go to a doctor who can refer you to a reputable allergist.
If your concern is more having to do with intolerances, try just eliminating certain food groups for 4 weeks at a time. Start with the things the company suggested might be the culprit. If you go this route though, you must abstain from these foods STRICTLY. If you consume even a little bit, you will have to start the whole process all over again.
We all need to take break from wheat and any kind of yeast several times a week. All those drives trues and ready made food full of yeast and chemicals. It's just about balance, when you ate junk food give yourself a break for a day or two or cut in half of what you eat. God gave Jewish people a holiday Passover where you eat unleavened bread for 7 days. Human being start learning know that we actually need a break from yeast or will suffer fromchronic fatigue, yeast overgrown and all kinds of health problems.
