Just been diagnosed with this condition and have been prescribed 40mg accutane per week to treat it along with an anti fungal shampoo. Has anyone else experience using accutane to potentially cure this? Or am I stuck with this for life? I'm feeling pretty s**t about the whole thing. Can low dose accutane really get rid of this over time?

Accutane will work because malassezia lives off of the oil on your skin and Accutane will dry your skin out. Pretty common to use Accutane to treat it.

Thanks for the reply. My worry is will it return once I stop taking accutane? Or will it get rid of it for good? Does the skins oil production return to its oily old self post accutane?

Hard to say because everyones different. Where is it located? And did you take antibiotics or anything before you noticed it? Also once Accutane clears it worst case you should be able to control it with the anti fungal shampoo.

Located on my face and scalp. Took accutane before at 80mg and cleared it but returned after a couple of months! Was treated as acne but looking back I think it has always been this! Derm says that low dose is effective as slowly alters the oil production giving a more permanent effect! Well here's hoping it cures it completely. It's just psychologically debilitating, as are most skin conditions. I find myself thinking I look hideous with it and then I see pictures of myself and it's not so noticeable. Suppose everything's worse in our own mind.

Do you suffer from it? If so how are u treating it?

Well I had it on my chest I believe but was also treated as if it was acne. I took accutane and it cleared up. I was on a lot of antibiotics over the years for acne which I believe was the cause. Hopefully it clears up for you though. And youre right its usually not as bad as we think.

Thanks so much for all your input. Hopefully I can beat this, as it has given me quite a beating over the last 3 years. Doctors just don't seem to understand how much these skin problems destroy lives. A guy I know took his own life recently because of a skin condition. It's really heartbreaking
