Tried To Drain A Cystic Pimple, Failed

Hi guys,

I tried tro drain a cystic pimple earlier with a sterilized needle and FAILED. It has been around for nearly a week now and I've been washing it twice a day with sulfur soap as well as taking amoxicllin 500 3 times a day, prescribed by a dermatologist. This morning, I swore I finally saw a shadow of the head around the middle, plus it "felt" like the damn thing was ready to pop. So I pricked the surface several times and squeezed very gently but nothing but dark red blood came out. :-(

My questions are: strangely, the cyst feels and looks suddenly tender and more flat. What does that mean? Does it mean the pus traveled deeper down the skin? Is it getting ready to double its size and come back angry tomorrow? Should I wait til that ugly head show up and try to drain it again or should I try to get a cortisone shot? Since I took Roaccutane in my teens, Ive always had mild to moderate acne that goes away with no problem but since I turned 30 these headless large bumps happen from time to time and refuse to budge!

Please help. It is really depressing me. Any similar experience or advice will be welcome. Thanks, guys.

The more you try to pop and squeeze, the longer it's going to stick around. It's probably having a really hard time healing right now, so try your best to leave it alone. I take an ibuprofen to help reduce inflammation, but that's about it. Once it comes to a head again, at the very most I'd recommend using a spot treatment as the medication can now penetrate more easily into the spot and get to work on it :)

:-( I was afraid of that. What kind spot treatment works best on these stubborn cysts? Also, what do you think of getting a cortisone shot? Thank you!

Some people have had luck spot treating stubborn cysts with black drawing salve. Have a look, see if you think this might be for you.

Here's the link to the post:

Hope it heals up soon! :)

I had never heard of black drawing salve but that looks like a pretty promising option! I actually have yet to find something that does much to cysts so definitely give that a try!

I've never gone the cortisone shot route, but that does tend to be the quickest way to get the swelling down. If you're able to get into your derm quickly, that's always a possibility. But if not, give the drawing salve a shot. I'm so curious about that now!

Thanks, DeLovely. I read the thread and I am now excited to look for this black salve tomorrow. May I ask what is the brand name that I should look for?

I know right! I'm going to look for it tomorrow. Hopefully it works for me too. Will post back with updates. :-)

Actually I don't...if it's not in the thread then check with your local drugstore, see what they have. They'll know what it is. Glad you're excited...hope it works! :) Let us know how you do.

I tried a Cortisone Shot on a cyst that I tried to pop and failed (much like you) and it did absolutely nothing. Cortisone shot will only work on a cyst that you HAVE NOT tried to pop. Right now your cyst is like an open wound + acne which is a bad combo. Don't mess around with it. It will go away in good time. Ice may help reduce inflammation.

Ah that's good to know! I wasn't aware of that with cortisone shots.

I agree that ice works well for many aswell. For me personally, it doesn't seem to have much affect, but it doesn't hurt to try! Just make sure you have a barrier of some sort between your skin and the ice put it in a ziploc bag, etc. Applying it directly to your skin can cause even more damage.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Unfortunately, I could not find black salve today. I live in Dubai and have been in about 6 pharmacies today and some of them have never even heard of it. My only hope is to go to a homeopathic drugstore or order it online. I am dying from impatience and I hate the fact that this cyst is still under my skin. :-(

I will definitely try ice. I am also thinking of using epsom salt in the meantime since I've read a lot of people had good experience with it. Don't know what else I can do at this point, patience is not my strongest virtue <sigh>.

Hey sammycat, don't worry, patience was very my strongest virtue either! Unfortunately with those cysts, no matter what you do to help them, they will always take longer than the rest to heal up. Give ice a try, pop an Advil or some other kind of ibuprofen to help with the inflammation, and let it run its course. Easier said than done, but that's all you can really do!

Omega 3's are another great internal source of anti-inflammatories, and while they won't do much for this spot, consider taking them to help with future ones. In general, they're really good for your skin and all around health anyways :)

Thanks, klm15. At least it's good to know I'm not alone. I actually eat a pretty healthy diet of lean protein and veggies, with almost no dairy and sugar. Which makes it more frustrating since no matter how healthy I eat, I still get rewarded with these monsters. Makes me just want to eat a bag of chips everyday for all it's worth! Still, you're right about the Omega 3s, will be adding more of that to my diet. Thanks! :-)

Hey no worries :) I know the feeling!

My diet sounds very similar to yours, granted it's only been about a month and a half since I've changed it to that, so the effect that it should hopefully have would probably only be starting to become noticeable now. And yes, add the Omega 3's in! Also, zinc is another fantastic supplement that many see results from taking. I take that aswell!

Are you currently on acne.org's regimen or any other skincare regimen at the moment?

Hi klm15. I'm not on acne.org's regimen at the moment. My skin regimen as of now:

Morning:

Sulfur soap

Sunblock spf 30

Evening:

Glycolic soap

Retin-A

Neutrogena light night moisturizing cream

To tell you the truth, I don't think benzoyl peroxide works for me anymore, which is why I was hesitant to try The Regimen. BP worked when I had moderate acne in my teens, then it got so severe that my dermatologist then had to put me on Roaccutane. After that, I stayed clear except for the occassional nodulocystic pimple, and BP does nothing for those! This one that I have right now started small and I put BP on it every night hoping it would stop it from growing, but it actually made it worse.

Im worried because lately Ive been getting these cysts more frequently and im always afraid I might relapse, so Im adjusting my regimen until I find one that works. What about you? Have you found a regimen that kept you clear?

I've had a similar problem recently and what helped me is the 2.5 percent bp, or any bp cream for that matter directly on the cyst, ibuprofen and try putting ice in a ziplock bag and apply to cyst for about 5

Minutes until it goes numb. It'll make the swelling and redness go down. But just be patient ! It'll be alright!

You could try looking at health food stores... I use stuff called Aztec Indian Healing Clay for cysts.
