I'm very, very happy for you that you've managed to clear your acne and I'm not meaning to go on a rant here, but it really frustrates me that you're presenting this as a "cure" for everyone.

First, some foods have been scientifically (not just one person's anecdote) proven to make acne worse. Iodine is one culprit. Dairy is another. Other foods have either not been studied enough or there are conflicting conclusions.

Second, correlation does not equal causation. You did not control all the other possible variables in your life and environment when testing foods on yourself. I myself have made the error in assuming that because I ate a lot of food X one day and then broke out a few days later, the cause must have been food X. That's not necessarily valid.

Third, while you may have found that you can control your acne with the foods you eat, you have not cured it. As you mention, when you don't follow your own rules, you have a breakout. There is no cure for acne. You didn't specifically say that this is a "cure", I just want to make that point clear because so many acne sufferers are looking for a "cure." There isn't one.

Which brings me to the last bit of my rant: Fourth, while some people can manage their acne by eliminating some foods, for many, many people food elimination alone will not completely manage their acne outbreaks.

Or, food elimination might manage one aspect of their acne even if it does not manage all aspects. For me, eliminating dairy reduced the amount of inflammation I saw. I still get very clogged pores though, dairy or not. Eliminating gluten did nothing for the clogged pores either. My skin sheds too quickly for my pores to keep up without a topical intervention (glycolic acid). Taking a massive dose of Vitamin A might help that issue (accutane), but you could never eat enough Vitamin A from foods for it to help with skin that sheds too fast. So my point is that food cannot help me with that contributing factor (clogged pores) to my acne. And eliminating other foods will also not magically help my skin to stop shedding so fast.

I am not negating that you have found an effective way for you to manage your acne. I just want to make these points clear to others in the name of not giving false hope.

One last thing: I know there are some very vocal people on acne.org who are firm believers that a clean diet can solve everything. They even will throw links around to studies backing up their claims. For every study that shows gluten contributes to acne, though, I can find another that says it does NOT. So, there's that. And if the "I'm clear because of food" people can make their personal anecdotes valid then the more of us who claim, anecdotally, that a strict, clean diet has not solved our acne problems are JUST as valid.

Looking Forward, thanks for this post. It is easy to share what works when you're clear, hoping it will help others but sometimes people forget that 1 size doesn't fit all. I have been on diet changes for almost 2 years and it has not helped my acne at all. Still sticking with it as it keeps my weight down and my blood sugar in check. It's been a frustrating process and I admit that I am at the end of my rope (when accutane fails you 3 times, there seems to be no where else to go). I honestly thought Paleo would be my solution but alas it was not.

Here's to hoping something eventually works for the both of us

tien10, you mentioned Cetaphil. Which one were you using exactly? There's a daily facial cleanser and a gentle skin thingy. Which one do I use?

I didn't even mentioning anything about a cure for acne. I said I figured out ways that held off acne for me and I could help you if you had questions. Other than ranting about your problems and what you tried, how about posting some questions you want answered that I could probably help?

Like maybe tell me what you eat on the daily etc.

Lol, I even mentioned that my diet won't work for everyone...do you even read all the previous posts before you started ranting man? Whoever wants my help, as I mentioned earlier, just make a daily log of what you eat, do during day, sleep schedule etc and maybe I can pin point exactly what might cause it etc.

I'm using the gentle skin cleanser for all skin types. Once you use it and have oily skin, you'll love it because it does not leave you dry at all and wipes away the oily feeling.

A. I said I knew you didn't call it a cure.

B. I said I knew you were approaching this as very personal.

C. I'm not a man.

Again, I'm very, very happy for you that you've found something that works for your acne.

I am, in general, not finding these sorts of posts of "I'll tell you what to eat/do/think" helpful at all in this community. Here's a question: Why do you think that you are qualified to offer this sort of advice beyond your personal experience?

I'd much rather see posts of encouragement and empathy for one another than yet another person telling me they can "help" me manage my acne if I only do things their way. You're not a doctor. You're one dude who has had happy success. It gets old.

Also, this should probably be posted under the Diet and Lifestyle section, which I tend to avoid.

To each their own. I do have a biochemistry degree with nutritional background, so I do know how some things work relative to our bodies. Posts of encouragement mean nothing without actual guidance. It's like giving someone a fishing rod and telling them good job, instead of steering them in the direction that could help them catch fish.
