Okay so I'm 15 I first started breaking out from acne when I was literally about 10 years old and then on its gone straight down hill my self confidence has dropped rapidly, I don't like going in really crowded places because I'm scared of what people may think I don't like getting up close to people because they may say something I just really do not know what to do anymore I have to see a doctor every 2 months but he just gives me the same stuff and says it's getting better but I know they aren't I took a photo from the first 2 months to now and you can see they look 1000x worse I'm just really stuck right now I've heard good things about accutane and I've asked my doctor about it and he basically said no to my face and said we only prescribe that to people over the age of 18 and I've saw all the side effects to it and I'm more than happy to take the risks I just wanna know would I be able to request that I take accutane or my parents and if I take it at this age will the acne come back and if so can I take it more than once? Btw I dunno if u need this but I'm 5'11 and 9 stone but yeah I'll post pics here below.
Oy, I know what it feels like to have your derm keep you on topicals with bad results. Sorry you are going through this.
15 is pretty young to try this drug, although not unheard of. If you visit the Accutane logs, you will see others who are close to your age.
However, there is some evidence that Accutane is not as effective (less likely to lead to permanent remission) when taken by people as young as you, so waiting a little might help your chances and maybe your derm knows that?
Also, I would think they want to see if it decreases with age before prescribing something so serious. Accutane is wonderful, but it does come with serious side effects, some of which can be permanent. I'm not sure I was in a place when I was 15 to make this kind of decision. It's easy to say you would take those effects, but will you still feel the same way if it doesn't permanently clear your acne and you're left with permanent vision issues or hair loss?
If acne is really ruining your quality of life, then you should pursue this, but be prepared that Accutane is a) not always effective and b) often accompanied by permanent side effects.

I agree with the above post, please wait before making any rash decisions, especially when you feel desperate or depressed.
Accutane is a powerful drug, you need alot of tests and checks to make sure you are fit to take it.

Thanks for the quick replies Kim28 & Bonsai77 I know what you both are saying and I am aware of the side effects that may occur but there's a risk on every thing and if there's a chance that it may cure my acne I'm gonna take it, my dad took accutane at my age when he was a teen and suffering from acne all on his back and it worked for him and also Kim28 they don't look bad on the photo but in person they do and you know what people are like today they judge you for everything all i want is to be normal i:m like the only kid at my school with acne as bad as this and I don't even see a dermatologist just my usual GP I just really don't wanna be turned down for accutane I have my mind set on it and I know it's the only known cure and I know it's the cure for me I just don't wanna go through all different topicals until I'm 18 to then have to end up having accutane anyway what can I say to my GP to get him to refer me to a dermatologist?

Youre desperate for accutane and feel as though that is the best route for you...it worked for your father.
They might try and give you some topicals in the mean time or as a substitute, but stand your ground. Ive only been to the doctors ouside of japan (im only here for a year) so not sure what they are like really

Say "I would like to be referred to a dermatologist, please". Hopefully that will do the trick.
This worked for me, no problem. Most doctors are happy to try and help you, it is not their goal to make you suffer.
I did find my derm was resistant to Accutane at first (acne not 'severe enough'), but I tried the topicals she asked me to try. What have you tried? There are some things other than Accutane that can be very effective for some people. Also, derms are often resistant to prescribe Accutane unless they are confident that there isn't any other solution, so you might want to see what the derm says before making up your mind.
I did find that my derm was more willing to prescribe the Accutane when she realized how much my life was affected by my acne. So, telling them what you have told us (as the other poster mentioned) about how it affects you and how you feel might help.
I still wouldn't be surprised if they tell you to wait, or try other options first. 15 is very young for this drug. If so, I would just let them know you are really serious about the Accutane, try what they are suggesting and see how it goes. If they know you want Accutane and can see that nothing else is helping but THAT YOU ARE TRYING, I think you might have a good case. If you go in there insistent on Accutane and unwilling to listen to anything else, it might not go as well.
