After a shower I wrap a washcloth around one finger and gently pry the blackhead out with clean fingers .(Doesn't always work.) Supposedly Mario Badescu silver powder helps with this, too.

I also use an ice pack to deal with redness, but don't pick/bruise skin if you can.
