Staph Infection Possible?

Hey so I've had acne quite bad out of the blue for the past few months, I think it's probably hormonal as I have suddenly developed facial hair and oily skin at the same time (I'm 27/F).

I haven't seen a dermatologist yet but my GP gave me doxycycline, dianette and differin (I've been using all 3 for a couple months...no real improvement so far).

My question is: is it possible that I have some kind of staph/bacterial infection which isn't acne and that it just hasn't been picked up?

How can I tell if its definitely acne and will the dermatologist be able to tell 100%? Will he carry out a swab test of some kind?!

Thanks for your help!

I think there isn't any test they can do to find out if it's staph or acne but

1)You feel your hormones changed so it is most likely androgen related acne (like mine)

2)Have you done any blood test for hormone levels-ultrasound? Not that it really means something.. my hormones were normal but obviously i have very sensitive androgen receptors so it's like i have many androgens when in reality i don't. Doxycycline kills staph too so if you want to test this, after you finish the antibiotic course you could stop your bcp and see what happens. If it was hormonal it may take months to start breaking out (like i did when i stopped spiro) but if you do it's too late, you have to wait again for bcp to start working like the first time. So since you did notice possible hormonal change i suggest against stopping the pill. It's up to you of course.

My hormones were all normal but I think I have an imbalance as I'm a recovering anorexic and haven't had a period in 6 months. I'm staying on Dianette for at least 6 months to see if it works (so far I'm a month in).

I had an intravaginal scan to determine if I have PCOS just waiting for my results.

Thanks for your reply.

Let us know the results, i hope they are good! If you want it as birth control stick to it, if you want it only for acne we shall see after the six months period.

Alrighty,

I've had 3 MRSA (which means pennecilin can't kill it) staph infections. I'm 99.9% sure that they were a result from staph bacteria getting into my acne lesions. You'll probably be able to tell by noticing it getting really large or by having the skin on and around the infection going numb.

GET TO THE DOCTOR! I kid you not it will only get worse.

Sulfur something pills healed me right up and helped my regular acne a lot!

Good luck

doxycycline is effective against mrsa as well.
