Hi
18 year old male. Have been trying to combat acne with cinnamon, chromium, vitamin D3, magnesium, alpha lipoic acid and zinc.
I know this is gross but I have a really high body temperature. My hands are usually always sweating and I can't tolerate the heat very well. When I got my TSH levels tested last year, they were on the low side of normal. I'm suspecting mild hyperthyroidism...I've done the 'neck test' too and you can see my thyroid quite visibly.
I have read that zinc stimulates thyroid activity. Once I cut it out (50mg zinc picolinate), I began to clear up. I have also read cinnamon and chromium speed up metabolism (i.e. increasing thyroid activity) and earlier this week cut them out.
I am now just taking 30,000 IU Vitamin D3 every morning with a fatty meal and ~ 600mg magnesium citrate powder at night before bed on an empty stomach. I appreciate the D3 amount I'm taking is very high but studies have proven this is the safe threshold with no side effects. I do know I have a deficiency in it as I'm always inside in the dark.
So could the high thyroid activity be causing my acne? Any general advice? Thanks.
Thyroid problems affect almost everything in your body. Hormone balance is very important for acne-free skin and this is the reason that acne begins during puberty. If left utreated it is a potentially lethal situation so you should visit a doctor to find out if there is indeed a problem and maybe take madications.
I have had graves disease since I was 14 over 20 yrs and yes it can cause acne. It controls the master hormone gland pituitary gland! There are certain supplements that aren't good for those with hyperthyroid zinc is one. I would advise you to see a physician and monitor/manage your thyroid!
