Hi,

22 Year old male with mild to moderate acne on my face, Mainly whiteheads and red bumps along jaw line and around mouth and chin.

Been going on for around a few years now, Tried antibiotics like erythromycin, tetralysal done both courses for 8 weeks and no improvement. Tried creams and topicals like Duac, Zineryt done nothing but make my skin drier and redder. Tried most OTC treatments with no improvement so now i'm stuck at a dead end.

Got doctors appointment tonight with my GP and want him to refer me to the Dermatologist as this has gone on long enough and it is stopped me from going about my normal day life, e.g working, meeting new people, low self esteem , i barely leave the house anymore and considering i used to be soo out going and done nightclub work it has effected me hugely.

Whats the chances i would be moved onto accutane due to the effect it is having on my life in general?

Thanks

Mason

Dont take accutane especially if your acne isnt severe, its not worth the health risks. Some people appear to tolerate it OK others have catastrophic results. Its basically a big gamble .

To be honest its a gamble im willing to take if it will help me in the long run. Im starting to miss days of work and lose friends due to my acne and confidence problems. Face is uncontrollably oily now face and nose has to be wiped all day and oily like 20 mins after washing my face

u should take care of ur diet n lifestyle along with meds.

that will definitely help u with the oiliness.

supplements like vit b complex,c, and zinc does help.

whats ur diet and lifestyle like?

u can try azithromycin..its not as 'hyped' as accutane.

I totally understand I have been there. I had cystic acne and felt ugly and pathetic...but a )accutane is not a cure-- most people's acne comes back within 6 months to 3 years. How would you feel after a taste of being clear if you have to deal with it all over again? and b) are you really willing to risk things like sexual dysfunction, hearing loss, hairloss, digestive disorders, night blindness, arthritis, and severe depression? I thought it wouldnt happen to me but I ended up suicidal, after one month. Which is worse, acne, or spending time in a mental hospital for trying to kill yoursefl? Just saying, try EVERYTHING befor you try accutane.

My suggestion is try spearmint, b vitamins with zinc and saw palmetto for 2-3 months, you have nothing to lose. With accutane you potentially have everything to lose.

Your acne and treatment history sounds very similar to mine. My GP was very happy to refer me to a dermatologist who didn't hesitate to recommend accutane so I don't think you will have a problem getting it if that's what you want :)

Hey I'm sorry you had such a bad experience :( I guess sometimes you just have to go with the system... Did they say what they'd do if there was no improvement at follow up? Maybe they'd consider Accutane then? I guess this probably won't make you feel any better but at least your skin isn't so bad that they wanted to give it to you straight away - I was actually kind of upset when I was told I should go on Accutane - you know you're skins bad when the Derm think's it's bad! And Accutane has all those horrendous side effects as well - you don't want to risk them if there's no need - I guess there is a good reason why they don't hand it out to everyone. I'm still sorry though, I've had enough of acne too, tbh I was fed up ten years ago... I think it's really positive you've seen the Derm though. Even if it seems like they don't care I don't think they will discharge you til they've got you better. It might take a while which sucks I know but be patient I think you'll get there :)
