Is My Acne Hormonal?

I've never had 'perfect skin', but it wasn't always bad either. Whenever I did have some bad break outs, everyone would just blame it on my 'hormones'. So, I always assumed my acne was hormonal.

After doing a lot of research I'm wondering if this is actually the case. I do get quite a few zits on my chin, but they are not limited to that area. I have whiteheads too (on my forehead) and the occasional zits on my cheeks.

How do I know if this acne is hormonal or not? I started taking yaz birth control a few weeks ago, my skin was clear when I began my first pack but broke out immediately the next day. I got a few painful cysts on my left cheek and some smaller zits on my chin- had never had a breakout like that before!

I'm scheduled to see a dermatologist who hopefully will have some answers for me, but I'm really wondering if it has to do with hormones or if its something else. I take good care of my skin - I wash, tone, and moisturize twice a day. I know yaz is supposed to help with acne... but maybe since my skin wasn't too bad to begin with it is having the opposite effect?

Any options/advice welcome!

I would pay attention to things that spike your hormones and see if they correlate with your breakouts.
