I think I fucked up with retin-a a few days ago. I have only used it once on my chin and the area around my mouth. I now have this strange bumpy rash around the corner of my mouth (see picture), problably applied too much there. My chin is fine though, only a bit dry.
Should I put cetaphil/vaseline on it or just leave it be? I'm not using retin-a untill my skin is normal again.
I used to get rashes like that on retin-a & it's not much to worry about- just leave the area alone for a few days & it should clear up.
If you don't mind me asking, why are you using Retin-A? It's notoriously harsh to the skin, & yours looks excellent. If you're worried about breakouts, Benzoyl Peroxide used sparingly has next to no side effects & is effective as long as you don't experience cysts & nodules. Or, if retinoids work for you, Adapalene (Differin) is not as strong as Retin-A but, for me, has no side effects.
Thanks for your reply Rorius. My skin was pretty bad a few months ago, I had inflamed acne on my cheeks and around my mouth. I think that breakout was caused by me starting with birth control pills. I've been taking zinc supplements which seems to control the acne very well. I haven't had any new breakouts, only red marks from the last one on my back and face.
I have been using BP for years but was never very consistent with it, I used it more as a spot treatment. I still have closed comedones on my chin. Do you think BP will clear that up if I use it every night?
I didn't know that Retin-A could be so irritating. I'm going to be more careful with my skin from now on.
I find I can use BP both morning & night if I use it quite sparingly with hardly any ill effects (a bit of dryness and flaking, but it's unnoticeable) and it's really excellent for acne that's near the surface of the skin.
But if you've not had any new breakouts for a while then it could just be worth ditching the lot & see how it goes, they do more damage than good to healthy skin (as you've found out!)
I can't really comment on birth control pills since I'm male and have no experience with them.
How is the rash?
