Looking For Diagnosis - Pictures

Ive had a frustrating acne problem for about 4 years now or so, or since i was 16. See, it all started when i was introduced to the use of tobacco (snus), i quickly got addicted to it and used it on and off for about 3 years. After about 5 months of of usage, i began to notice that the salivary glands in the lower part of my mouth had begun to grow in size. I became very paranoid because little did i know what it was. I just assumed it was tumors and that my lower face would have to be removed. Along with the growth of the salivary glands came this stubborn looking acne that would just grow in this one area. And it has continued to do so ever since it started, and even keeps getting worse. The area protrudes and causes me to look quite deformed in certain lighting instances, which causes serious loss of self confidence.

Im not going to write my lifes story, just trying to make you understand a bit about the background. On to the point.

Ive gone to two skin disease specialists now, and they both dont see this as a problem, nor do did they take me seriously. They seemed to just diagnose me with some common thing, which bothers me a lot, because i have never seen anyone with the same specific condition as i have. One doc gave me Duac and that didnt work on it.

Anyway, there must definitely be a correlation between the tobacco use, growth of salivary glands, and the acne that followed right after.

I hope someone here will recognize this condition, and will be able to supply me with information that could help me.

Sorry for the awfully long post.

Heres a pic of me - Its usually swollen and it gets worse depending on how much sugary junk i eat, like soda and candy, and you know what i mean. Too bad that stuff is addicting and delicious! Ive visited numerous doctors that seem to know about nothing about what they are talking about, they simply diagnose it with their eyes saying its normal acne, when i really know it isnt. Theres something in that area that is directly causing this horrible deformity. I refuse to go on accutane after reading numerous posts about the hell that poison brings into peoples lives.

Just give me some suggestions people, ill listen to anything. I bet you are much more reliable than these doctors i have to wait for months to see, and then they always tell me the same bullshit and want to put me on accutane. THERE MUST BE ANOTHER WAY!

Perioral dermatitis? A rash that can develop mainly around the mouth and nose. Red or white heads sometimes itchy or burning feeling. Can start because of an allergen or something your skin doesn't tolerate any longer. Mine was acne meds it came out of nowhere. I used these creams for years. Plus I know a few people that's are related to things they put inside their bodies.

Maybe bring that up to your derm? Often times docs misdiagnose this for acne. And it's treated entirely different.

Metro gel & antibiotics and I used organic apple cidar vinegar.

Could also be demodex mites. I read about it and they cause rashes, acne, bumps etc.

or yeast over growth? I'd say its one of those but I'm no doctor just basing it on my own personal experiences

Thanks Aballarina, very helpful response, ill look into these suggestions. My doc may prescribe me Isotretinoid, since i asked him for something really strong. Just putting it out there.

Im actually kind of praying that its what you suggested - Perioral dermatitis. That would make things so easy.

Yep I am also on accutane.

Good luck! Antibiotics will clear up the rash or acne which ever you have. Although I know accutane can be used for perioral dermatitis as well. Let me know if it works for you :) when your face calms down a bit you should try the acv because it helped me a lot :)

This must by my hundredth time saying this, but i don't care, because it's too important that you become aware. Antibiotics are only good while you are on them. And when i say good, you will most likely see a decrease in acne. Perhaps perfectly clear skin. However, this will not last when you are taken off of them because you have not addressed the underlying cause of your acne (which can be very different from person to person)

You should detox your system from all the chew you did, and drastically alter your diet if you haven't. Both of these can be done at the same time. There are so many methods of detox it's not even funny. But one way is through tea. You can pick up distilled water by the gallon from wal mart, and this will provide a clean water source to start out with. Then pick up some rooibos tea or decaf green tea and drink multiple 8 oz glasses a day. You can sweeten it with some 100% stevia or raw honey to make it taste better

Diet is a big trial and error by itself. Although there are some general things you can and should be doing. Like avoiding processed junk foods like chips, candy, refined carbs like those in pasta and bread, excess sugar, soda, etc.

And start consuming more greens and fruits and vegetables. The easiest and most efficient way to do this is to make smoothies using organic spinach, banana, coconut milk, and various other fruit you like. Blend it really well so that it's readily available to absorb by your body. If you've consumed the typical western diet all your life, it's very likely that you have poor gut function, and are lacking nutrition.

Nuts like almonds, pine, walnuts (and maybe cashews) are good to eat along with dried fruit. Just make sure the dried fruit isn't coated with sugar and crap.

If you consume dairy, you should switch to organic dairy, that is not treated with antibiotics or growth hormones. Stonyfield Farms makes an organic yoghurt and it's available at wal mart.

Many members notice great improvement when they either limit their dairy intake, or completely get rid of it. Yoghurt has probiotics that will be beneficial to your gut. Kefir does too, but again, it should be an organic variety. You can also ferment vegetables from home to give your self probiotics, or pick up a reputable brand at a whole foods type store.

There are loads more things you can eat, and my suggestion to you is to browse the nutrition section of this website. Topically, i'm not sure what you're doing, if anything. But i'd try using something simple and 100% natural, and get rid of any harsh chemical topical treatments/washes. I make a green tea/sea salt toner and it works extremely well as a topical solution. It's the only thing i use, when i do use it. You can find the thread here in the mild to moderate acne section

Don't say I didn't warn you if you go the route of antibiotics. I've read countless horror stories of people clearing their acne, only to have it come back worse than before when they are taken off of them.

Here's a good place to start diet wise

Swollen salivary glands are often a sign of a more deep rooted illness than just some skin problem manifestations, such as you have. They could be infected as well as a sing of an autoimmune disease, such as sarcoidosis, which also presents with lesions around the mouth and jawline, which is what you seem to have.

If you also have troublesome dry eyes, dry lips or any dry mucous membranes it could be Sjogren's syndrome.

If you have additional symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, joint pain, as well as the aforementioned dry mucous membranes, I would suggest you visit your physician, not your dermatologist.

I suggest you also give up smoking.

If it's just indeed acne, it's probably hormonal or a food allergy.

Hi there!

Have you tried eating more healthy food and drinking more water?

Try cutting down on sugar intake, including soda. Eat fruit and drink a lot of water, it can help and it cost nothing to give it a shot :)

Try and spend less time in front of the screen also, games such as Chivalry SuperBrah are entertaining but the skin needs sunlight to stay healthy. I think good health comes from the inside through good nutrition, pills and medications to me seem to often alleviate symptoms without always doing much to the root cause.

Good luck mate!
