So here's the whole story. I used to have quite bad acne on my jawline as a teenager growing up but by following the regimen it was controlled and went away to only 1 or 2 spots at a time. Which i could live with quite happily and did for a few years.
Im now 21 and have and keep getting continual breakouts just on my forehead and i don't know what is causing it.
In May '12 Panoxyl (BP in the UK) was discontinued so i decided to attempt to see how i was without it and went on a course of Doxycycline. I was fine for a number of months and then spots began to come back, with a vengeance.
I am back on the regimen and have been for a few weeks, but for some reason using dan's BP has completely ruined my skin. It's red raw flaky and i keep breaking out in huge spots which are hard and painful. But you say to press on so i am with no avail.
I don't know what happened to my acne to make it so resistant to anything. Its doing my head in. My job is about as public as it gets and i need confidence to do well. Its really getting to me recently and i have very low self esteem. Missing out on social activities and dreading going to work. Just wanting to hide in my flat.
Its not diet - I go to the gym and look after myself and eat really really clean.
Im very hygenic and cleanse properly
I tried cutting out milk - no improvement.
I cut out protein shakes - no improvement
Lymecycline - Nothing
Doxycycline - Still on it just doesnt seem to do much
Erythromycin - Nothing
Tetracycline - Nothing
Tea tree oil - nothing
Quinoderm - nothing
Dan's BP - Should in theory work but i keep breaking out.
I even started drinking green tea to no avail
I don't know what to do. Im fed up of it all. So i have a few questions for you all.
1) How severe is my acne? Pimples/papules/cysts?
2) If i get to a derm in the UK would i be laughed at for asking for accutane?
3) Should i be pressing on with the regimen despite my red lizard skin face?
4) Is the regimen for me?
Really appreciate the help. I need it. I'm losing the plot
hello hadouken,
sorry to hear u r going through such a hard time, i think a lot of us understand though, thats the reason why we r all here.
it seems like u have tried a lot of things however i would reccomand u go to the dermatologist. Dont worry about what the doctor will say, its their job to see u adn even if he/she might say u dont need accutane they might suggest something different or new.
when i went to see my dermatologist i had only 3 spots but showed her photos of how bad it can get, she first recommanded Gels like RETIN-A but i never sow good relusts with it, so after insisting that i will not use gels on my face any longer she decided to give me accutane.
Must say if u start that be very careful as it can have some very strong side effects. stay close to this web, right down your feelings and keep positive people around you.
Keep us up to date what u will do.
Wishing u all the best,
FAAB!

Mmmkay...your acne looks very similar to what mine looked like at it's worst when i was 21. At that time i was switching from harsh cleanser to harsh cleanser, washing twice daily using a couple cleansers each time. And then applying topical BP 10%. I was also under the impression that i was making efforts to eat healthy (i now realize i was far from it)
Basically, your forehead skin is a great representation of what mine was. You say you eat a clean diet, and i'd be interested to hear what you include/exclude. Also, we have a warped view of what having good hygiene is in our society today. I'd say washing your face with harsh cleansers even once a day is not good hygiene. It's stripping your face of it's natural defense layer, and causing your skin to freak out. I don't wash my face with any cleansers. I make a 100% natural toner, and when i do apply it every other day, i consider that the 'washing'. My skin is in the greatest shape of my life, and it's not from washing with cleansers. Quite the opposite. It's also thanks to my diet.
So, you might consider stopping face washing altogether, and simply let the water briefly run over it in the shower. And i'd stick to only using natural topical approaches. If you're interested, there's a toner that i and many other users are making using green tea and sea salt. You might simply do like i'm doing, and just apply it with your fingers and call that your washing. Once a day is really all you need.
But again, i'd love to know what your diet is like

Breakfast
Bowl of cereal with milk or porridge made with water
Banana
Glass water
Toast with margarine
Cup of green tea
Lunch
Pasta with homemade sauce made with chopped tomatoes, herbs, onion, tuna, sweetcorn.
Dinner
A portion of meat either chicken breast/steak/pork chop
Vegetables either salad potatoes/green beans/sweet potato/peas
Carbs either brown rice/mashed potato
Or a one pot wonder like chilli/spaghetti bolognese which i made up with a number of vegetables from scratch.
Snacks
Handful of peanuts
Banana
and after a workout - cottage cheese with raisins or natural yoghurt with honey and a glass of milk
I don't deviate from this, i don't eat fast food or chocolate or processed ready meals. I may have a cup of instant coffee once a day but thats it.
Thanks for sharing your diet Hadouken.
Things that i personally would do differently:
1) Try eliminating gluten grains for a month or two. And all refined foods, including toast and pasta.
2) Try cutting out consumption of dairy for a month or two. And if you do consume it, it should be organic, and labeled that they don't use anti-biotics or rGBH hormone. Also organic yoghurt/kefir are good sources of probiotics, but they should be unsweetened. You can add raw honey or stevia to the yoghurt to sweeten it. Preferably not refined sugar as it is just plain bad for you
3) Peanuts by themselves can cause acne flareups. They absolutely did for me. If you want to consume nuts, stick with almonds, walnuts, and maybe cashews/pistachios. Pine nuts are also great. Peanuts are actually legumes btw, which is something i never new
4) You should begin consuming much more raw greens. There is a whole thread in the nutrition section discussing green smoothies and their benefit in skin conditions. When you blend up stuff like spinach and banana various other super fruits, the nutrients in them become much more accessible by the body. I blend my green smoothies very fine, so that my body can access the max amount of the nutrients. Coconut milk or almond milk are great substitutes for dairy, or you can use a 100% fruit juice in the smoothie.
5) Sprouted, organic Chia seeds are a great source of protein, potassium, and omega 3's. The omega 3's are in ALA form, but can be converted to dha by the body. And there are many factors that play into how effectively this can happen. But basically the healthier you eat, and the more crap foods you avoid, the better your body will be able to accomplish this. Navitas make a great Sprouted, Ground, Chia seed blend, and you can order online or get them at a whole foods type store.
6) I'd start eating organic, and non-GMO food. The herbicides and pesticides present in non-organic food alone could be the cause of so many people's acne. Let alone the actually genetic modification that could be playing a major role in body function. These foods are modified to resist round up, the chemical used to kill weeds. And that's the chemical that you are consuming when you don't eat organic.
7) Meat also contains anti-biotics/growth hormones unless it is organic and labeled that it does not contain them.
8) Raisins and dried fruits are so healthy, and loaded with nutrients and minerals that the body needs. It's great that you are consuming them, and i'd encourage you to keep doing so
9) If you consume salt, i'd switch to using a high quality sea salt like Celtic light grey, Himalayan, Dead Sea, or a quality Mediterranean. Wal mart actually carries a Himalayan in the salt section, but whole foods stores have them as well. You might need a grinder. Table salt is bleached and heated to extremely high temperatures that alter the molecular structure of the salt. You body views table salt as a toxic substance, and no matter how much you consume, it won't satisfy your body's need for sodium. Which isn't a alot to begin with
10) Water source. I'm not sure if they chlorinate and fluoridate the water where you live, but if they do, you can pick up distilled water by the gallon for cheap at wal mart and other grocery stores. And to remove the fluoride that can remain in the distilled water, you can simply leave it out in a bucket so that the chlorine can evaporate. Or you can pour the water through a water filter like a Brita water pitcher. The carbon filters are supposed to remove any chlorine/herbicides/pesticides left in the water
These are basic guidelines that i follow in my diet, and this is a diet that has kept me clear. Also you can make a super healthy homemade chocolate using organic virgin coconut oil, raw honey, cocoa powder, sea salt, and vanilla. It's a way to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way. I can post the recipe if you're interested. I also have a recipe for homemade ice cream that is great.
But yeah, hope this helps. And i hope you consider taking it easy topically. You may very well be causing your acne by using too many harsh cleansers/creams. I'd personally give my skin a much needed break. Doing this very thing is what made me realize i was abusing my skin, and not allowing it to simply heal. Fix yourself on the inside, and it should show on the outside
