Comedonal Acne

Hello dear members of acne.org.

Perhaps some of you can give me some insight..

I am 19-years old and I've had acne since I was 14. At age 15 my acne got worse (I squeezed pimples and did everything I should not have done) and if my acne was mostly on forehead before then it spread all over my face at that time.

At age 17 I went to dermatologist again and my skin got better and better. My skin is still so much better than it used to be, red pimples visit me rarely, but I still have comedonal acne that doesn't want to go away. It really troubles me because I can't go off medication without those little comedones coming back and making trouble. Two days ago I went visiting my friend and I took everything but Differin and Dalacin T with me BUT I took care of my skin the best I could BUT the next morning my forehead was horrible. It is still bad but as soon as I got home I started to use my medication again.

Literally, I can't even relax from medication without those nasty comedones showing up. sad.png

More information:

I use moisturizer that contains AHA,

I exercise about 4 times a week,

have used: Differin, Dalacin, Duac, Skinoren, Retin A,

I avoid foods that contain gluten,

I don't eat chocolate and avoid other sweets.

I use cleanser to clean my skin (I do that twice a day),

I take omega-3 capsules,

I don't drink milk or eat other dairy products.

I consider myself pretty healthy, but my skin doesn't really agree with that. sad.png

Yeah, I feel ya! I was on tazorac for years and had to stay on it just to not get cysts, much less comedogens. Never got rid of my blackheads completely, no matter what the treatment (topicals, antibiotics). I'm 29 now and doing accutane cause my clear face just went crazy for no reason and turned into severe acne this time around... I used to have to get extractions for my blackheads/whiteheads to stay at bay. I know you can use topicals for a long time though if it comes to that. I was on the taz for 5 1/2 years and used differin for 2 more before that. I too am a health nut and gym rat so don't believe the hype about acne being a couch potato or junk food eater's disease, lol! Your acne is pretty mild, so I would suggest getting back in with the derm and seeing about adding a facial cleanser to the mix. Plexion cleansing cloths worked good for me when I had mild to moderate, mostly comedogenic, acne in my early 20s. They slough off the top layer of skin to prevent dead skin cells from clogging, which contributes to all types of acne, including blackheads. I used to tear them in half and use twice a day. Also, if you wear makeup make sure that you are using non-comedogenic brands. I use Clinique and Almay and have good results with MOST products. Powder has never worked for me and always produces clogs of varying degrees. Always check the labels though of anything you use for irritants. I use this list and it seems to be pretty helfpul: http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acnedetect.htm

And if you are using OTC face wash, don't use the exfoliating kind with the little scrubby things because that irriates your skin and adds to acne. Good luck to you and I'm sure you can get this nipped in the bud soon! ;)

Thank you for your reply!

I have heard about Accutane - it's a pretty harsh medication. I wish you good luck with it! I wonder whether it would help me with my acne but my dermatologist is very cautious about prescribing it to me.

My next visit to derm is in January. I just hope that things will change someday. I can't even enjoy life propely because my acne gets worse when I stay away from medication even for a day.

I already use a cleanser. Using a cleanser has definitely improved my skin condition but those little comedones are too stubborn to finally go away.

Thank you for the link! 🙂
